* CastingGag: Marcus Richards, the quizmaster, is played by Alan Davies. In RealLife Davies is a regular guest on long-running British quiz show ''Series/{{QI}}'', in which there is a RunningGag about him finishing last.

* UnresolvedSexualTension: This trope is mentioned by name when Alfie and Sofie interact with each other in a flirtatious manner while walking back to their lodgings[[note]]at Chaucer College, where the quiz competition is taking place[[/note]] after a night out on the town; specifically, they're playing a game of "I spy with my little eye..." using acronyms (rather than single letters) as the clues, where one of said clues is the acronym U.S.T. and the correct answer is, of course, "unresolved sexual tension". MoodWhiplash ensues when the very next thing that happens is Alfie noticing a dead body in plain sight close to their walking route.

Added DiffLines:

* DiesWideOpen: For both Ethan, found floating face up in a courtyard fountain, and Eve, found strangled in her room.

Added DiffLines:

* FirstLove: Ethan was this for Robin; they dated when she was 14 and he was 16. She still places a lot of emotional attachment to that relationship and is shocked when he doesn't remember her.
* FixingTheGame: As it turns out the quiz weekend is a scam. Marcus fixes the game for his scam partners (in this case, the students), pays them much less than the promised £5000, and keeps the rest for himself.

Added DiffLines:

* HeKnowsTooMuch: The motive for both murders. Ethan was going to reveal Sebastian's complicity in graft and money-laundering relating to an old construction project. Ethan told Eve this before Sebastian got a chance to kill him.

Added DiffLines:

* TheMafiya: Only in the backstory. Sebastian the lawyer was involved with the Russian mob in a construction project that was riddled with corruption. When Ethan Croft found out about it, the Mafiya arranged for him to be accused of sexual harassment and lose his job.
* NeverOneMurder: This trope was used in ''every single episode'' of ''Lewis''. In this one, Eve is found strangled to death about halfway through.

Added DiffLines:

* OffTheWagon: Hathaway's angst over his prize guitar getting stolen leads him to start smoking again.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Robyn is a single mother of a two-year-old who is desperate for a husband. She clearly has hopes of starting something with Ethan, the boyfriend of her teenaged years, only to find that he's forgotten her. Towards the end Marcus chats her up, and she immediately says "Are you single?" A CringeComedy moment comes at the end when he finally admits that he's got a wife and two kids.
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: Professors Terry and Milner, the Oxford dons, are shown in one scene playing chess with each other.

* FallenOnHardTimesJob: In the backstory. The detectives wonder why Ethan Croft, who had a degree in modern languages and was an expert translator of Slavic languages like Russian and Polish, left Oxford and now works as an elementary school teacher, while getting side gigs translating for Russian soccer players. It turns out that Ethan was quietly booted out of Oxford after he was caught having sex with a student.

* OfficeRomance: Although there had been ShipTease moments between Lewis and Laura Hobson going back to the earliest episodes of ''Lewis'', this is the first episode to indicate that Robbie and Laura might be an item. Hathaway can't stop needling Lewis after finding out that Dr. Hobson was his date for the opera weekend. Laura booked the hotel, and Robbie wonders if she got one room or two. At the end she tells him she got two.

* LonelyBachelorPad: Lewis's life as a lonely widower is emphasized in a scene where he sits alone listening to music, then cutting to Lewis ironing his shirt, then cutting to him calling one of his children because he has nothing else to do. This helps set up the later development about him taking Dr. Hobson off for a weekend getaway.

Six teams of two people each have come to Oxford for a weekend getaway called "Quizaholics", staged by gamemaster Marcus Richards. The contestants pay £500 apiece for a chance to win a £5000 prize. Among the contestants are: Ethan Croft, a language master and once an Oxford professor who left the place under a cloud; Eve Rigby, a comely blonde; Robyn Strong, her partner who has a past acquaintance with Ethan, Alfie and Sofie, young students struggling with tuition who could really use the £5000; Sebastian Anderson, a lawyer; and others.

Added DiffLines:

* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Robyn and Ethan dated when they were teenagers. Robyn still thinks of him as her FirstLove and when she sees him, is delighted. She's thus deeply hurt when he doesn't remember her at all.
* ContinuityNod: Another nod to Hathaway's off-duty hobby as a guitar player and a fan of "world music." He goes to a World Music Festival, and is very pissed off when his guitar is stolen.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Ethan's wife Jean drops him off at the trivia weekend. He gets out of the car and ''immediately'' starts hitting on good-looking Eve Rigby, there on the sidewalk. His wife shoots a DeathGlare at her rear-view mirror as she drives away.
* GrammarNazi: As befitting an elderly Oxford don. When smarmy Marcus Richards starts the introductions with "First off," Prof. Terry says "I'm sorry, but why 'off.' Why not simply 'first'?"
* IntroDump: Most of the characters, participants in the quiz weekend, are introduced all at once when they introduce themselves at the first dinner.

"Your Sudden Death Question" is the third episode of the fourth season of ''Series/{{Lewis}}'', aka ''Inspector Lewis'' in the United States.

Ethan reveals himself to be a "smooth operator" who particularly would like to have sex with one of the unattached women there for quiz weekend. He also makes some cryptic comments about how there are people at Oxford who deserve to go to jail. Ethan goes out on a walk with pretty Eve...and the next morning he is found murdered! But why? Was it because of his odd comments about how people at Oxford who belong in prison? Or was it his constant philandering, like how he tried to get into Eve's pants despite the fact that he has a wife back home? Maybe Robyn, who is upset when Ethan failed to recognize her, did it. Or maybe Marcus, the quizmaster who gives off strong con artist vibes, did it.

With one of the contestants murdered, Lewis and Hathaway require all the others to stay in the college over the weekend, and the quiz tournament proceeds. The weekend is further dampened, however, when Eve is found murdered.

Meanwhile, both Lewis and Hathaway have had their weekends ruined by the murder investigation. Hathaway had to leave a music festival, and if that wasn't bad enough, his Gibson guitar was stolen out of his car. (A subplot follows the detectives as they look for the guitar.). Meanwhile, Robbie Lewis had to give up a weekend trip to see an opera--with Dr. Hobson.

Alfie, one of the two young students, was played by Laurence Fox's younger brother Jack.
