In the Vale of Arryn, precisely somewhere close to Gulltown, Maya Iresons is summoned to a meeting in a remote and unassuming shack. As it turns out, the owner of this shack is none other than her employer, the Bronze Lord Orson Royce, who uses this remote place for clandestine meetings. Royce informs her of a new threat to the Vale, allegedly the Storm King Argilac Durrandon, but she sees through his deception. Regardless, he wants her to travel to Raylansfair and break into the archive, where she is supposed to retrieve ancient contracts that Lord Royce hopes to use for the good of the Vale.\\\

Just then, her companion for this journey arrives, the gruff scout Gregar Balvind. Maya decides that the quickest way to Raylansfair will be by boat and reluctantly, Gregar agrees. Lord Royce reveals to her that he expected this choice and already prepared a boat for her, where she is supposed to meet with the third member of her group, the guardsman Irving Todd. Maya, who knows Irving from the past, is less than thrilled, but accepts regardless.

In this dire situation, Loren received word from Lord Robert Raylan that he wishes to aid the Rock with five hundred men, which would be enough to protect the southern border, allowing the kingdom to focus on their northern and eastern fronts. However, with Lord Robert dead, his castellan Harris Flowers has since broken this promise and declined to send aid. To remind him of his lord's vow, someone needs to be sent as an envoy to Raylansfair. Prince Lucion brings up that Willfred could be well-suited for this task, much to the young knight's chagrin. He mentions that Willfred's bastard uncle, Roger Hill, is currently a knight errant in the northern Reach. Roger, who had effectively turned his back on his family after a particularly harsh fight with his brother Darren, is considered a good and loyal man who will surely lend his aid to the Rock. Though there is bad blood between Darren and Roger, even Willfred's father agrees that seeking his aid will be for the best.\\\

At last, Vashord Tallian also requests to be sent alongside Willfred and his father grants him command over two hundred Reyne men, around twenty of whom shall cross the border near Crakehall together with him.

She mentions that he has been seen with the barmaid Kyette before heading out half a day before the knights arrive.\\\

Shortly afterwards, a fight breaks out between Leonard and Temari when the knight is approached by Temari's younger sister Behara. The two come to trade blows, but Leonard is the superior fighter and emerges victorious. He injures Temari, but spares him. Still, this fight is enough for the innkeeper, Aylard Kawl, to kick them out of the inn.\\\

Lucas and Leonard continue their way down south, now hoping to catch up with Kyette, who has left the inn to procure supplies from the nearby village. As they saddle their horses, they are approached by the barmaid Lunett Kawl, Aylard's daughter, who asks them if she can come with them. She lies to them, claiming that she has an uncle in Oldtown's city guard who might be able to help and this is enough for Lucas to take her on the road with them. The three manage to catch up to Kyette, who tells them that Dairon has been on his way to meet with Quent, the Archmaester of Magic.

The king quickly calls for a war meeting, which Willfred attends alongside Tallian and Two-Face. There, he reveals that the situation is dire for the Rock, with their enemy, Harren Hoare, having started a new invasion of their lands, with his forces besieging the Golden Tooth, the border fortress of House Lefford, while the Iron Fleet launches significant attacks on their coastal holdings. More dire than that, Quentyn Crakehall uncovered a plot by Ironborn marauders to attack the weakly defended southern holdings of the Rock, effectively encircling the kingdom.

In Castamere, Willfred Reyne, son and heir of Lord Darren Reyne, witnesses the arrival of King Loren Lannister of the Rock and his entourage at the ancestral seat of House Reyne. He is disturbed on his vantage point by his sister Alanna, who after a brief conversation reveals that she is afraid that he could be called to war. Willfred consoles his sister and the two make their way downstairs, where the rest of the Reyne family and their household has gathered, including Lord Darren himself, his wife Lady Mileena, Two-Face, who is the captain of the guards and Alanna's handmaiden Lea.

As they compose themselves, the king and his men arrive. Loren Lannister, the stern and firm King of the Rock rides ahead, accompanied by his son and heir Lucion, the lords Stevron Marbrand and Quentyn Crakehall as well as Vashord Tallian, a ward of Lord Westerling, alongside Tinnet Reyne, Lucion's squire and Willfred's and Alanna's younger brother. Though the king's reason for coming is serious, his arrival is cordial and the sibilings are overjoyed, despite tensions between Tallian and Lord Reyne as well as Willfred and Lucion.

!!Richard's storyline
After the disturbing events of the previous chapter, Lyria does not confide in her friend Richard Harking about what happened and about Wolfius Woodbark. While she leaves, he continues to the tavern, where he meets up with his friends, Philip Loren and Urid Strad. The three talk and have a good time, until Richard spots a man harassing the barmaid, Ilish Granver, while also implying that he knows Lyria. Heroically, Richard decides to intervene. Later that evening, Richard starts the journey home, to his farm. On his way through the nightly city, he walks past an alleyway, where he spots a gruesome sight. After a drunken John Gutten leaves for the night, the conversation becomes more serious, as his right-hand woman Janae reveals that John has been suffering greatly from the loss of many comrades in the recent years. She hopes that Lucas might rejoin them, which the knight politely refuses on account of his duties. He informs Janae and the Gutters' newest member Samantha Ducard about his past and his troubles with his brother Petyr. When he mentions Raylansfair, Samantha reveals that the Gutters are on their way to the city, where they plan on working for Harris Flowers.

Roger, who had effectively turned his back on his family after a particularly harsh fight with his brother Darren, is considered a good and loyal man who will surely lend his aid to the Rock. Though there is bad blood between Darren and Roger, even Willfred's father agrees that seeking his aid will be for the best.

Though Torvin is taken by surprise, he agrees and allows Garthon to join him for his next meeting with Tully.

That night, the two brothers leave Harrenhal and meet up with Edmyn Tully and his co-conspirators in the woods near the castle. There, Torvin and Garthon meet Gabin Strad and George, the former a man-at-arms of Reymand Orkwood, the latter a soldier in Tully's honour guard. Edmyn Tully accepts a sceptical Garthon in their midst, but tensions between the two men remain. He reveals his plan. One of the Breaker brothers will accompany George to Maidenpool, where they will acquire a special crossbow and poison to kill the king.
