** Played straight in the same series with the resident trans boy, Takatsuki. He cuts his hair early in the first volume, from a bob to a pixie. In middle school he grows it back into a bob due to a female friend of his saying he looks better with it. After being told how it makes him look like a tomboy and he's "cute" with it, he cuts his hair. At the beginning of high school he begins letting his hair grow again though, which signifies [[spoiler:Takatsuki's confusion about their gender identity and their beginning of identifying as female]].

* In ''Literature/TheWeakestTamer'', Ivy cuts her long hair as part of her decision to disguise herself as a boy and avoid being identified. It also serves as a symbol of her cutting all ties with her hometown.

* In ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' Keiko starts out with pigtails, then loses them in favor of shorter hair after they get singed in a fire trying to save Yusuke's body. They both would have perished in the fire (well, Yusuke was already dead, but with his body destroyed he wouldn't have a vessel to return to), but Koenma agreed to save her life in exchange of "something very important" for her - Yusuke didn't care what so long as he saved her life. Later on Koenma reminds him of this tradeoff and shows Yusuke what he meant, so basically he was trolling Yusuke without being a liar. She has extremely long hair again at the end of the series, though.
