** HBP is a BreatherEpisode, and it was probably a good time to make him captain, while things were fairly light-hearted; and also to give a different narrative to what was going to be the last Quidditch episode of the series. Although I myself have wondered why in the film, Ginny stands by his side, almost as a joing captain, all ready to deliver her BigShutUp to call the team to attention.

** When we first see the Sorting Hat, it is described as being so dirty that Aunt Petunia would not have let it in the house, so perhaps it is crawling with lice.

** Remember that the Dursleys send Harry useless presents, such as a fifty pence piece, and Dumbledore's comment "letters addressed to the headmaster will find me". Presumably the same is true for letters sent to Hogwarts by Muggle parents.

** You only have to look at BoardingSchoolOfHorrors to see many examples of far worse conditions. Massive dormitories have been around as long as boarding school itself. Creator/RoaldDahl describes his own dormitory, with about twenty beds, ruled by a fearsome matron. By comparison, Hogwarts is extremely cosy. Interestingly, in the other magical boarding school ''Literature/TheWorstWitch'', which was written about 25 years before Harry Potter, their castle is much less nice than Hogwarts, but the pupils all sleep in separate (very cold) rooms.

** It may be a hangover from many other school stories, where women teachers are never married; if they did get married, they would stop working. At Hogwarts, since all teachers have the title "Professor", you cannot tell from their name if they are married, but in school literature such as ''Literature/ChaletSchool'' or ''Literature/MaloryTowers'', the women teachers are nearly all "Miss", rather than "Mrs".
