** There are mentions of a past war. Also, the protagonist meets some people from outside the city. And, having read a translation, I'm not sure which alphabet they're using, but they might be using several (there are both "delta"s mentioned and "ar"s).

*The hero is brought to despair, shock and horror when first taught about the existence of imaginary numbers, about square root of minus one. It may seem to be just a hint of his ultra-rational mind; but then you realize that he defends his totalitarian state by claiming that bad stuff in it is "with the + sign, not - sign". Yes, there are spies, but "spies with + sign". There are executions, but "executions with + sign". But the square root of minus one... It cannot be a positive number (positive times positive is positive) AND it cannot be a negative number (negative times negative is still positive)! It destroys his utopia of "+-signed" spies and executions!

* People's numbers are strangely small. One letter and four digits would make for a maximum of 260,000 people.
