Never is it stated in the film that humans ever asked Maui specifically for Te Fiti's Heart. It just mentions that Maui felt that all he did for humans was "never enough" for them and that sense of inferiority/failure led him to steal the Heart to impress the humans; the humans themselves asking for it isn't mentioned.

** [[spoiler: Te Fiti herself is demonised as Te Ka, no one knew that she was actually Te Fiti trying to get her heart back, she was demonised as well. That's why it's so important that Moana was the one to restore Te Fiti's heart and also be the one who helps Maui understand that he is so much more than what people define him as being. Because she is making up for the crimes that humans themselves have done.

* Why is it so important that Moana is the one to restore Te Fiti's heart, instead of Maui? Because she's ''human''. As this [[http://fumbledeegrumble.tumblr.com/post/165907147306/faerieincombatboots-justthatraccoon4 tumblr]] points out, Maui stole the heart because the humans of that time ''asked'' him to. This would also tie in nicely with Maui in Polynesian Mythology because most of his deeds were done because humans ''asked or complained'' about certain issues to him and he'd fix it. The line ''"It's nice to see that humans never change"'' could even be a StealthInsult because this song is sung immediately after Moana ''demands'' that he help her return the heart. In fact the entire point of "You're Welcome" is secretly to show that humans are fickle and quick to demonise people; humans kept asking him to give them gifts, because it was never enough for them. No matter how amazing he was, it was never enough for people. Finally, he made a mistake while trying to give the gift of life itself to humanity. From then on, how was he remembered? As a trickster god who screwed everyone, ''"Maybe you were but now ... Now you're just the guy who stole the heart of Te Fiti. The guy who cursed the world..."'' That’s why Moana was so surprised by the fact that he wasn’t a monster! She had no idea of all the good things he did. Maui was a guy whose only purpose was to make people happy but he made one mistake and was forever demonised by humanity.
--> '''Maui:'''"I gave them islands, fire, coconuts. Anything they could ever want."\\
'''Moana:'''"You took the heart for them. You did everything for them. So they'd love you."\\
'''Maui:''' "It was never enough."
** [[spoiler: Te Fiti herself is demonised as Te Ka, no one knew that she was actually Te Fiti trying to get her heart back, she was demonised as well. This issue has been addressed on the character page with the trope Blue And Orange Morality. It is a force of nature not a human being. Projecting horror onto its actions is not really supportable.

* The Ocean:
** The Ocean is a sentient being. It gets horrifying when you realize that it is aware of the numerous people who have died in it. Like [[spoiler:Tui's friend.]] Also as Moana points out, though usually the Ocean is benevolent and friendly, it was far from gentle when taking Moana to Maui's island.

Way too much speculation in this example

** Even worse if you consider that this could probably affected him later. Once he got out of the island, the first thing he was going to do is getting his hook back. Without Moana, he probably would have created a new distraction for Tamatoa while he take the hook, but Maui would have never left without taunting Tamatoa. Which would have led to him not being able to shapeshift and Tamatoa again trying to eat him, but this time without Moana to save him.

At the time Moana leaves, Tui is focused on attending to his dying mother and had no idea that Moana was planning on leaving, thus he had no reason to try to stop her. Regarding Pua, yes he would be sad, but that hardly qualifies as Fridge Horror.

* Imagine Tui's reaction upon finding out Moana has sailed out beyond the reef just ''after'' his mother's death. In fact, Chief Tui's fears regarding the open seas were tame in comparison to the deadly threats that Moana faced there. He just refused to believe in them.

** Imagine Pua not being able to find Moana after he ran off in fright.

Rewatched the Tamatoa scene and I can't find any place where Maui looks "alarmed and surprised" when Tamatoa reveals himself.

* Why did Maui look alarmed and surprised when Tamatoa revealed himself if he was familiar with him? Because Tamatoa is ''bigger'' than he was when they'd met. Certain breeds of crab just keep growing, and Tamatoa is ''ancient''. If his claim about his grandma is anything to go by, he's only gonna get bigger from here.

This example doesn't hold up. The song, at the moment it is sung, is simply a reflection on the state of life in Motonui. The song itself isn't foreshadowing anything, it only serves to show the dire straights the villagers are in as the growing dark threatens to taint the island and it's ability to sustain life begins to fail.

* On a first watch of the movie, its first song, ''Where You Are'', sounds like a positive, catchy tune. Once you've watched the entire movie though and listen to the lyrics of this song again, they turn out to be very dark, foreshadowing and a big case of denial, in hindsight. E.g.:
** ''The island gives us what we need'' - a few scenes later it's shown the island doesn't provide food anymore (diseased coconut trees, absent fish) and the people are almost starving; and the ruling Chief disregards this (and his daughter's advice regarding it).
** ''Consider the coconut'' - this might have become a cool MemeticMutation in Real Life, but in the movie very soon scenes follow which show the coconut trees are diseased, which puts the Motunui people at risk for starvation.
** ''I'll have my people to guide me'' - Apart from her Gramma Tala, no Motunui people guides Moana except her grandmother - her whole mission comes about because of her own spirit, and her being chosen by the ocean. And in the end, ''she'' becomes the one to guide ''her'' people - literally, as she gets them wayfinding again. Also it's FridgeLogic if you realize it would have made more sense for Moana to say "I'll guide my people" instead of the other way around, since she's to become the leader; but this is probably intentional to show how divided she feels about becoming the Chief, versus going wayfinding.
*** Alternatively, it means she is guided by the needs of her people. While her father ignored the problems of the island and insisted everything would be fine, Moana looked at what her people needed: an end to the darkness. Also, she [[spoiler:has a vision of her ancestors sailing to new islands]], and that inspires her own voyage. That's why her adventure began, because she was ''guided by her people'' and their needs.
