* The usage of the Koopalings could be seen as this as well, as fans began to complain about their appearances. After their most recent appearance up to that point was ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'', fans desired to see them return, and got their wish in ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii''. But over time, the Koopalings began to appear too frequently, and when one appeared, all of them had to. In particular, every ''New Super Mario Bros'' game included them as bosses, whereas the first had employed a bevy of unique KingMook bosses (plus the returning [[VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine Petey Piranha]]) when it wasn't using Bowser or Bowser Jr, all of whom required some strategy to beat. By contrast, the Koopalings only vary in the arena they're in and all have the same strategy to beat.

* The removal of lives and game overs in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioOdyssey'' was seen as completely dumbing down the difficulty and removing the risk of failure for messing up. The idea of lives lost and game overs being trivial started as far back as ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'' where losing a life just booted you out of the course and a game over sending you back to the title screen where you can just load your save file and try again. All in all, the overall difficulty in each main game has more or less been consistent and it wasn't until "Odyssey'' that the concept of lives and game overs were removed so players could just keep trying rather than having to reenter the course and start over from the beginning each time they failed.
