The trope comes into effect when the protaganist makes a situation worse. Cole did the opposite. If not for him the group would have continued killing people and getting away with it. Also they would have not faced justice for the previous murders as Cole pointed they commited. His actions not only ended their killing spree and revealed them for what they did.
