Platinum Games, formerly Clover Studios, is a Japanese video game development studio.

Originally, the main creative minds here (including HidekiKamiya, Atsushi Inaba, and ShinjiMikami) were a part of Capcom as the Research and Development department known as Clover Studios, but left Capcom due to creative disputes.

This talent then formed a different company, Seeds Inc., but before anything was produced by Seeds, they merged with ODD Incorporated to form PlatinumGames, a fully independent company.

PlatinumGames moved to ally with Sega, and while their games were still cult hits, they performed considerably better than they did at Capcom.

Their alliance with Sega, however, has produced mixed results; Although their presence in the industry has lead to Platinum's games becoming not only critical hits but commercial ones, their haphazard port of Bayonetta to the [=PlayStation=] 3 and their relative indifference to the western release of AnarchyReigns may have soured their relationship.

Platinum seem to have moved on from their Sega partnership to an exclusivity deal with Nintendo; they are currently producing a new original title, plus a sequel to Bayonetta, for the company's WiiU console. Whether this is a long-term partnership or not remains to be seen.

Irony Some characters from Clover studios would eventually be used in Capcom's newest crossover fighting games. Mikami and Kamiya had stated that they have considered sequels to their games, but Capcom's use of the two men's characters led them to the conclusion that they can't continue to identify with their characters.

Compare to CyberConnect2, a similar Japanese game devleoper, that like PlatinumGames, tend to turn out relatively well recieved yet still rather CultHit games.

Removed segment in introduction concerning Gene in MVC 3, and the assumption that Platinum would be allowed to continue work on Capcom franchises such as God Hand. Also corrected misc grammar

Originally, the main creative minds here (including Hideki Kamiya, Atsushi Inaba, and ShinjiMikami) were a part of Capcom as the Research and Development department as CloverStudios, but left Capcom due to creative disputes.

PlatinumGames moved to ally with Sega, and while their games are still cult hits, they are doing considerably more successfully than they were at Capcom.

Since allying with SEGA, the company's games have seen much more publicity on average. Part of this may be due to the fans expectations of high quality considering the pedigree of the games, which allows SEGA to put more faith in the company due to an increased potential for earnings.

Irony Some characters from the studio would eventually be used in Capcom's newest crossover fighting games. Mikami and Kamiya had stated that they would like to consider sequels to their games, but Capcom's use of these characters has caused them to decide that they cannot continue to identify with their characters. As such, the only game by CloverStudios that may see continuation by PlatinumGames is GodHand. However, statements by Mikami that he had too much freedom and got all he wanted out of GodHand, as well as rumors that Gene (the protagonist) would be available as a character reskin in MarvelVsCapcom3 make that highly unlikely. President Tatsuya Minami has since stated the desire to see more new out of the gaming industry.
