* SirSwearsalot: When the Alethi contact her in ''Oathbringer'', she curses like a sailor, which surprises Dalinar; she was always perfectly polite whenever they spoke. Navani explains that while Fen knows how to affect a courtly demeanor, when she's more comfortable she has a very foul mouth. It's therefore a bad sign when she stops swearing, and Dalinar realizes he's offended her.

AntiVillain: As with most of the scar he received 300 years ago Parshendi, Eshonai's main goal is the defense of her people while trapped between two near-equally bad options: either fight the Alethi in a slow battle of attrition, or allow Gavilar to complete whatever his plans were that would bring back the Parshendi's gods and start up another Desolation.
* BoldExplorer: She wants nothing less than to travel the world by herself, finding new peoples and places. In fact, this wanderlust is what led to the Alethi and the Parshendi meeting in the first place.
* {{BFS}}[=/=]CoolSword: The Shardblade she wields is noted to be big even for a Shardblade.

* DecoyProtagonist: Eshonai is set up to be the main viewpoint character of the series from the Singer's side, but dies offscreen between ''Words of Radiance'' and ''Oathbringer'', with Venli becoming the more prominant.
* DisneyVillainDeath: Adolin headbutts her into a chasm. She's wearing Shardplate at the time, so she probably survived the actual fall, but a Highstorm and an Everstorm crashed into each other right above her head, so her survival remains ambiguous. In ''Oathbringer'', she turns out to be dead, having drowned in the dual storm's floodwaters.
* DyingAsYourself: [[spoiler:The last flashback chapter in ''Rhythm of War'' reveals that she recited the oaths in her mind as she drowned, which allowed her to become a Radiant and die free of Odium's corruption.]]
* FightingFromTheInside: After changing to stormform, she gathers all those who refuse to change together, thinking that it will make them easier to execute once the rest of her people are Voidbringers. But she puts some of her closest friends in charge of guarding them, who then lead them down into the chasms, implying that her true self was manipulating her Voidbringer mind into giving them a chance to escape.
* FourStarBadass: A general with a Shardblade. The last Shardbearer among the Parshendi, actually.
* JustYouAndMeAndMyGuards: Rather conspicuously only engages other Shardbearers after they've been weakened by regular Parshendi warriors. Understandable since the Alethi have a considerable advantage in number of Shards they have.
* KilledOffForReal: She dies in-between Literature/WordsOfRadiance and Literature/{{Oathbringer}}
* LargeAndInCharge: The highest ranked Parshendi military leader left alive, and towers over her soldiers at seven feet tall. Looks even bigger since her Shardplate bulges out due to her War Form carapace underneath.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: She notes that she prefers to act contrary to the instincts the forms force on her. Workers are non-aggressive to a fault; when in workform she sought out confrontation. Mates are playful and useless; she forced herself to remain productive. She even orders her soldiers to attempt to paint while in warform, despite the fact that they are both physically and mentally unsuited for it. This neatly foreshadow the FightingFromTheInside above.
* ShockAndAwe: Gains lightning powers by assuming stormform.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: She accidentally caused most of the plot of the series by stumbling upon the Alethi while she was out exploring. Admittedly the Everstorm and the Desolation likely would have happened eventually anyway, but she feels understandably guilty about the exact events leading up to it.
* WorthyOpponent: Thinks of Dalinar this way.

everyone utterly contemptible. He comes out when some fool wakes him at a horrid hour of the novella ''Literature/{{Dawnshard}}.night. I suggest you ask the first man and not the second. All right?"''\\\

A swordsman who instructed Adolin and Renarin in swordsmanship.

* BlindIdiotTranslation: He's prone to spouting odd sayings that confound his interlocutors, then complaining that the language they're speaking has no good idioms. It's left ambiguous if this is the result of TranslatorMicrobes or if he's just being overly literal. This is an early hint that he isn't native to Roshar.
* CynicalMentor: As per usual, he's not a nice person, but he does help.
* DimensionalTraveler: He is actually [[Literature/{{Warbreaker}} Vasher, who somehow traveled from Nalthis to Roshar.]] [[WordOfGod Word of Brandon]] is this isn't his first time.
* MasterSwordsman: Teaches the Kholin brothers swordsmanship.
* MeaningfulRename: His new name is [[https://wob.coppermind.net/events/373-skyward-chicago-signing/#e12060 intentionally close to]] Nahel (like Nahel Bond, the bond between a spren and Radiant), which means "connection to the divine." This fits nicely with his status as a [[CameBackStrong Returned]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: As a Returned, he's been around for a very, very long time, even before he traveled from Nalthis to Roshar.

* AmbitionIsEvil: Her desire for more knowledge and more understanding slowly devolves into just a desire for more power. The influence of the Voidspren in her gemheart is a large part of it, but that wasn't all of it.
** She lampshades this at the end of Oathbringer, wondering how she became so obsessed with power.
* AmicableExes: Zig-zagged. Parshendi are asexual in all forms except mateform, so she refers to the man who seems to be, in human terms, her husband, as her "once-mate" when in any other form. Since neither of them particularly care for mateform, they don't have any intention of entering it again any time soon. They are, however, still closer than friends. Until he dies.
* AntiVillain: In ''Oathbringer''. She's still working for the bad guys, but begins defying them in subtle ways and eventually becomes a Radiant.
* CharacterDevelopment: Her first appearances painted her as something of a SmugSnake, a villainous foil to her sister Eshonai, the most prominent and damning example of how far the listeners had fallen. After Eshonai's death and seeing the truth of what her actions have led to, she becomes a far more conflicted character.
* DarkMessiah: She ends up in a form of power called an "Envoy," sent to tell a carefully edited version of the Parshendi-Alethi war in order to inspire the singers to Odium. At the end of ''Oathbringer'', after becoming a Knight Radiant, she begins teaching them of what the listeners were like before the war.
* [[spoiler: Main/DishingOutDirt: in ''Rhythm of War'', she starts experimenting with stone-shaping, as a Willshaper.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: Gradually over the course of ''Oathbringer''.
* LastOfHerKind: The Fused tell her that she is the last listener; whether they are unaware of Rlain or just don't care is unknown. Venli wonders several times where the survivors of the Battle of Narak went. It's implied that they became the Fused and are all dead.
* TheMole: She met a Voidspren who helped her develop stormform, thus causing the return of her gods that her people had been working against for millennia. In ''Oathbringer'', she becomes a Knight Radiant bonded to a lightspren and begins fighting against Odium from inside the enemy camp.
* MutuallyExclusiveMagic: Despite having both a voidspren and a lightspren, Venli is unable to both keep her RedEyesTakeWarning disguise and channel Stormlight simultaneously.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Struggles with this after seeing exactly what her gods are and the horrific way they use the listeners. Made that much worse by the fact that Venli herself was the main architect of their return.
* [[spoiler: Main/TeleportersAndTransporters: in ''Rhythm of War'', she uses her Radiant abilities to see into Shadesmar, as a Willshaper.]]
* TranslatorMicrobes: Her Envoy form can speak all languages, both the ancient Dawnsinger language and all the modern human languages. It even extends to body language and nonverbal communication, which allows her to interpret complex and accurate meanings from simple combinations of Rhythms.
* WrongContextMagic: Certain passages in previous books state that it's supposed to be impossible for singers to form the Nahel bond.
* YinYangBomb: After bonding to Timbre, she gains the ability to draw on Stormlight, but since she keeps the Voidspren for her Envoy form, Timbre keeping it contained, she can retain the abilities it gives her, and turn her red eyes on and off at will, though she can't have them active when channeling Stormlight.
