* BrainwashedAndCrazy: The Darkening makes the normally friendly nurlocs aggressive toward anything that moves nearby. It gets so bad that they start [[spoiler:eating the Sanctuary Tree.]]

* ColdBloodedTorture: What they're used for to punish Skeksis who have (as the Chamberlain puts it) "been naughty." He also threatens Gurjin with one if he doesn't talk.

* YouHaveFailedMe: Used as punishment by the Skeksis against fellow Skeksis for any kind of major failure they're responsible for, showing they can be extremely cruel even to their own brethren.

* TheDreaded: Just ''mentioning'' them is enough to make the Skeksis gasp, and skekTek in particular to start [[AiintTooProudToBeg whimpering]] and [[VillainsWantMercy pleading]] for "anything but that!" When we finally see one, it [[EyeScream doesn't disappoint]].
