* AntiHero: He's quite moody and violent for a Yakuza protagonist, especially at the beginning of the first game. Thanks to character development, he does lose his roughest edges by the time of the sequel, but he's not exactly as approachable as, say, Kiryu, Akiyama, or even Saejima.

* LegendaryInTheSequel: He is renown by the Japanese underworld in ''2'' for both his feat of 10 straight wins in Dragon Heat and being a world-class Boxer in America.

* MadeOfIron: He's able to recover from broken bones and injured joints unusually quick from both a story and gameplay perspective. [[ExaggeratedTrope Exaggerated]] at one point in the sequel where he can possibly take a dagger to the back of his neck from one of the bosses and not die.

* ScrewDestiny: He believes in taking his fate in his own hands, and multiple times he actively defies Ryo's prophecies.
* TeenGenius: While the usual Yakuza protagonist are 30-40 year old men with years of fighting experience, Tatsuya is an untrained street fighter aged at around 17-19 who is able to instantly learn martial arts and defeat even world class level professionals.

* TookALevelInKindness: He's become a lot more level-headed and disciplined by the second game (though not fully rid of his fiery temper), which leads him to acting like a mentor figure to the other fledgling fighters he encounters.

* WrestlerInAllOfUs: As per usual with most Yakuza protagonist's he has a few wrestling moves in his moveset, he can do a leg capture, a piledriver, or suplex someone into a railing for instance.

* BoxingBattler: At the very beginning of the second chapter after defeating Tomoki, Taizan teaches you the Boxing fighting style in a flash. Serves as a little foreshadowing to who he really is and what he is really capable of. He was also a former boxer aiming for the world championship in his youth and his fighting style is stated to have Boxing as his a base along with his mastery other martial arts.

* PermaStubble: He's certainly not clwan-shaven.

The very [[LargeHam hammy]] night club disc jockey who is also announcer and color commentator for Dragon Heat and Ashura.

* GratuitousEnglish: He peppers english words in every single one of his hammy fight announcements.

After the events of the first game, Tomoki retired from the pro-fighting world where he is now a leader of a Kamurocho street gang, out to settle the score with Tatsuya after his one year retirement from underground fighting.

* EarAche: In the manga Tatsuya nearly rips his Tomoki's ear off his head with his teeth.

* GracefulLoser: After losing in the second game, he knocks out an underling who tries sucker-punching Tatsuya. After that he wishes Tatsuya well and to watch out for Ashura.

* WarmupBoss: As the first boss in both games he's a massive step up to the standard enemy as his a.i. is smarter, he can soak up far more health, dish out more damage and for a first time player they are stuck using the terrible Brawling style against his strong Karate.

* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: He's truly grateful for Tatsuya reuniting him with his sister Chiaki and was touched by him defending his honor and philosophy as a fighter from his [[AngerBornOfWorry sister]]. In the next chapter's substory Hyuga fights Tatsuya one more time and teaches him the Wrestling style out of gratitude for everything.

* CasualtyInTheRing: Retired from the MMA scene and was estranged from his sister after he killed his opponent on accident in the ring. The casualty affected him so much he had to divorce from his violent fighting style in Dragon Heat.

* GoOutWithASmile: Has a smirk on his face after getting knocked out in his first bout with Tatsuya, he had his fun even though he lost.
* JustToyingWithThem: It's noted he doesn't have a perfect win record, no doubt because of his tendency to let the fight go on so he can have more fun with his opponent. He could've won by submission against a random Dragon Heat fighter in Chapter 2, but lets go of the lock so he can have a flashier finish.

* WrestlerInAllOfUs: His Dragon Heat persona is akin to a pro-wrestler, fighting in a way that might cause him to lose but it entertains a crowd and entertains himself. After beating him in the rematch he teaches you the Pro-Wrestling style in a substory.

Tatsuya’s former highschool teacher. In the past he told police of his student’s crimes leading to an arrest and eventually an imprisonment in a correctional facility, Tatsuya beats him up for this. Out to settle a grudge, Yuki makes his debut in Dragon Heat against his former student. To his surprise, his small and meek teacher is actually a 5th dan blackbelt in both UsefulNotes/{{Aikido}} and Karate. The third Dragon Heat opponent.

* BerserkerTears: After his defeat, he attacks Tatsuya in frustration of nobody understanding the reason why he continues to teach delinquents despite being beat around and disallowed to fight back. Once Tatsuya sees Yuki is crying in his anger, he lets his former teacher let his frustrations out without defending.

* TheCameo: Shows up in ''Kurohyō 2'' as part of a substory. Saeko apologizes for her brother being a pain to him as a student while Yuki doesn’t mind as Tatsuya has changed for the better. When a stalker shows up with a knife to attack her, he disarms the attacker and let’s Tatsuya do the rest.

* FirstNameBasis: {{Inverted}}. Unlike everyone else he refers Tatsuya solely by his last name Ukyo, which makes sense given he is a teacher.

* KungFuProofMook: Him and the mooks who use his Koryu style or the Hard and Soft style are almost immune to standard attacks with their counters, forcing the player to fight more carefully.

* MoreThanJustATeacher: Bullied by a couple of youths thinking he’s just a weak schoolteacher. He sets them straight quickly and forces them to call him sensei. He does this to mutliple delinquents around Kamurocho in the third chapter.

* TookALevelInKindness: All he wanted was to inspire a single person with his show of self-control and discipline. After Tatsuya understands Yuki’s philosophy and why he never fights back. Yuki is relieved and goes back to teaching. His appearances afterwards are nothing but affable and helpful to his old student.

The father of Tsuneo, a president of a high school Karate club and former class mate and enemy of Tatsuya. After his son was paralyzed from a spinal injury after a grievous assault, Fujimoto decides to make his debut in Dragon Heat to fight against who he thinks is the perpetrator. Tatsuya has another man with a long-standing grudge against him. A cab driver and former Karate champion who’s still got it. The fourth Dragon Heat fighter.

* {{Acrofatic}}: Despite being very hefty man, get his health low enough to be in heat mode and he’ll throw a flurry of karate strikes towards your way.

A very violent street fighter from Okinawa who had to escape to Tokyo for beating up 10 yakuza members. Now in the employ of the Nioka family and is their representative fighter for their rivalry against the Kuki family. The fifth Dragon Heat fighter.

* FlatCharacter: Up there with Tomoki as his chapter isn’t featured around him like the other fighters and instead is about Tatsuya trying to solve the conspiracy behind Dragon Heat. However he and Tomoki return in the sequel, with the game giving both of them some more characterization.

* ManBitesMan: This is his heat move. The fact he’s wildly biting the air before you fight him makes it seem he actually can’t wait to take a chomp out his opponents.
* ManipulativeBastard: He was the mastermind behind the Dragon Heat defectors subplot in ''2''. Pissed off that Tatsuya foiled his plans, he attacks Sasaki to lures Tatsuya into a rematch with him.
* OhCrap: Once he’s beaten he attempts a last ditch effort in breaking Tatsuya’s injured leg. Once he realizes the injured leg he was kicking the whole fight was the [[FakeWeakness wrong one]] he’s [[JawDrop mouth agape]] and can only mutter to himself in disbelief as he’s knocked out.

The leader of the "Lone Wolf Group", a biker gang made up of chinese war-displaced 3rd generation orphans; with he himself being half-chinese on his mother's side, who died from same arson that affected Tatsuya 15 years ago. The seventh Dragon Heat fighter.

* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Tatsuya's question "Have you already forgotten your feelings for mama?" reminds Cho of his original purpose. He forgets all his selfish desires and goes on to focus on finding his mother's killer.

* BigDamnHeroes: Him and his gang save Tatsuya from a kidnapping by some goons sent by the main villains in the 8th chapter.
* ButNotTooForeign: Is born from a missing japanese father and chinese mother.
* DelinquentHair: An undercut with three lines shaved to the side reminiscent of Tatsuya's hair, only with the long hair at the back of his head tied up and his sides are shaved rather than braided.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: His goal for fighting is to find his mother's killer, which the Nioka family promises to give information about if he wins. He affectionally refers her as Mama.

* FatalFlaw: His overambition. Taizan notes that Cho fighting for his family should make him strong, but he crosses it with selfish desires giving him "Fists of Murder", like Tatsuya use to have. Tatsuya has since changed and fights unselfishly, giving him "Fists of Light" that are capable of inspiring people. It's Tatsuya who wins the fight between the two.

* HeelFaceTurn: After Tatsuya gives him a ArmorPiercingQuestion, Cho cleans up his act and focuses on the more important matter of investigating the arson that killed his mother. From then on he's on the side of the good guys.

* NonstandardCharacterDesign: His eyes are smaller and slanted to show his chinese heritage.

* TalkativeLoon: Everytime he drones on about his ambitions which seem to change everytime whether it's "Control the Yakuza" or "Be a pro-boxer then travel to the US to be a pro MMA fighter".

* TokenMinority: The one of the 9 Dragon Heat fighters to be of mixed heritage.

Legendary soldier of 26 medals, former member of the French Foreign Legion, former police officer, and colleague of Isamu Washio, who pulled him out of death row for the crimes he had done as an illegal mercenary. The eight Dragon Heat opponent.

* AttackTheInjury: Tatsuya was beat up with a metal pipe the day before the fight, his legs and torso are severely injured and wouldn't you know it Aramaki's attacks specifically target those two body parts.

* KarmaHoudini: He was saved from death row by his former police superior Washio, and spared from being killed from the same man after the fight. He remains unpunished for his war crimes.

* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: His fighting style is said to be Commando Sambo and he resembles real life Sambo MMA fighter Volk Han.
* NoodleIncident: What were the war crimes he commited that warranted death row? Even DJ Rikuoh describes him as "Too wild".

* VocalDissonance: His voice is flat and a higher pitch than what you'd expect from a war torn soldier.

In the second game he has retired from fighting after ''Tiger's Gate'', an Osakan underground ring he fought for shut down and he was defeated by Asura. He now works as chaffeur for the Omi Alliance in Sotenbori.

* AchillesHeel: Has bad eyes that can be taken advantage of in a fight. [[SubvertedTrope Fortunately for him Tatsuya wants to fight fair]], to the point the game disallows strikes to Shima’s head and it’s an instant loss if his head damage goes to 100%.

* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Tatsuya from Asura in the second game, using his status as a member of the Omi Alliance and reputation of a former champion boxer to scare some Asura thugs away.

* BoringButPractical: Unlike the previous 7 opponents Tatsuya has fought with their own interesting styles, Shima is just a Boxer. However he’s undefeated in Boxing and is Tatsuya’s penultimate opponent in Dragon Heat.

* FairPlayVillain: He willingly fights with his detached retinas and doesn’t hold it against his opponent if they aim for his eyes, explicitly telling Tatsuya “Do what you have to do to win.” . He’s surprised when Tatsuya doesn’t attack his eyes at all and defeats him fairly.

* NiceGuy: Very genial in all appearances, the first thing he does to Tatsuya once they meet in the ring is apologize for his cronies roughing him up. He even sets Tatsuya up with a hostess on his bill once he hears his father had died.

* ArchEnemy: To Dragon Heat in both games, every chapter he's opposing them at every turn.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: His fate is unknown first game, but in the second he shows up as an ally for Asura.

* NiceGuy: He's always friendly to Tatsuya, and is always appreciative of him constantly helping him out.

The greatest street fighter in all of Kamurocho who's strength commands respect of all the street gangs and their leaders.
