The main protagonist. In this AU, Makoto is a simple, ordinary farm boy who lived a normal life with his parents and little sister Komaru in the quaint Hope Village. According to the devblog, he’s also the only one immune to and can cure the Despair status, one of the worst status effects in the game. Despite all that, unlike most support magic users in RPGs, he for the most part avoids UselessUsefulSpell, and can be a big help in boss battles.

* SufferTheSlings: Though an out-there weapon for a protagonist, slings are his WeaponOfChoice. A rare example of slings not being portrayed as a pathetic weapon. Despite this, characters like to hang a lampshade on the common depiction by doubting Makoto because of his weapon.
* SupportPartyMember: His main purpose is support, with his magic being focused on buffing his allies and crippling enemies. He does have a decent offense stat, but can only attack directly with his regular attack.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Curry, going by his bio in VideoGame/AbsoluteDespairGirls. The item ‘Royal Curry’ heals his HP 100%, while for everyone else it only heals 50%.

* LightEmUp: Has mostly light themed magic.
* NeverLearnedToRead: Like Makoto, he’s unable to read.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: He joins Makoto because he ‘forced’ him to agree to pay him in return.
* PluckyComicRelief: The main source of comic relief in the game.
* PsychicPowers: Supposedly, anyway.
* SimpleStaff: His WeaponOfChoice.
* StickyFingers: It is heavily implied that he goes around and steals random things from random places to hoard them in his TreasureRoom basement.
* StoneWall: He is weak offensively, but has high defenses and HP, as well as possessing healing magic.
* TokenAdult: He's 20, and the other party members are teenagers.
* TreasureRoom: Despite the so-called “debt” he claims to have, His ‘’basement’’ is this. It’s implied that he’s dodging payments so he doesn’t have to part with his money.
* VerbalTic: Says “dude” like in the Project Zetzubou translation.
* VideoGameStealing: Can steal items from enemies during battles.
* WhiteMage: Specializes in healing spells.
----
WMG:Byakuya Togami

The crowned prince of the Togami Kingdom. He goes out to investigate after Makoto and Yasuhiro alerted his father about the strange happenings, and "recruits" Makoto and Yasuhiro as his bodyguards.
----
* ArcNumber: His surname means 10 gods in Japanese. The kanji in his surname that means 10 is 十, which appear everywhere on his outfit.
* AntiHero: The most blatant of all the Anti-Heroic main characters in the game, (Besides perhaps Syo. He is a GoodIsNotNice PragmaticAntiHero or perhaps even an UnscrupulousHero.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: One of the more competent fighters in the group, and he's a prince.
* CoolSword/SpellBlade: His WeaponOfChoice is a longsword that would look like a BFS if it weren’t for him being 6 feet tall. He's able to make it into a lightning, ice, or fire blade whenever the situation calls for it.
* CounterAttack: He has an ability called Counter that lets him pay back physical damage double.
* DeadpanSnarker: As always.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: In the loosest definition of "friendship."
* Foil: To Makoto.
* GratuitousFrench: He says several phrases in French.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Played with. While he is not the main protagonist, he has the attitude and determination of one, and his weapon is a sword.
* LightningBruiser: Above average balanced stats in all areas, except in the magic stats territory, which he doesn't need anyway. Overall a strong and fast offense oriented character.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: His attack power is one of the best in the party (behind Syo and Aoi) even though he’s a scrawny Bishonen.
* NervesOfSteel: He never displays fear, no matter the situation at hand.
* RoyalBlood: Has BlueBlood in canon of course, but in this universe he’s also royal.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He is sent by his father to investigate the recent happenings.
* ShelteredAristocrat: Yasuhiro assumes that he’s this right before they enter Quiet Woods at the end of the demo.
* SymbolMotifClothing: 十 encased in a decagon, which is actually the Togami Conglomerate logo in canon.
* VictoryIsBoring: Sometimes, when you defeat an enemy within two or three turns, he will say this.
* WarriorPrince: Skilled in combat with his Lightning Bruiser type stats, and is a prince.
----
WMG:Touko Fukawa
A gloomy scribe that keeps to herself and pushes everyone away, but is well known among the high class for her novels. She is spotted in the Hope Village shop, getting yelled at by an NPC and then yells at the shopkeeper for not selling ink. She fights using black magic.

Not yet playable in the demo.
----
* BlackMage: Specializes in offensive magic.
* ColonyDrop: Her ultimate skill, Scribe’s Meteor.
* CripplingOverspecialization: According to the devblog, she’s a very hard hitting magical attacker. She does that well, but she’s terrible at anything else.
* EnemyScan: Has a study skill that reveals enemy attributes.
* HairDecorations: Bow-like things that look like two crossing quills on both braids.
* LifeDrain/ManaDrain: The devblog mentions that she can suck HP or MP out of enemies.
* PaperMaster: Her first limit break is Paper Storm, which fires sheets of paper at the enemies.
* ThePenIsMightier: She uses quills as her WeaponOfChoice. In addition to her physical attack, not that you'd want to, she also uses it for spellcasting as a MagicWand of sorts.
* ReclusiveArtist: InUniverse. Despite being a well-known writer among the high class, nobody knows what she looks like.
* SquishyWizard: She has a wide offensive magic skillset that hits very hard thanks to her MAT stat being so high, and can freely spam it too thanks to her high SP, but she has the defenses of a wet paper towel.
----
WMG:Genocider Syo
Touko's SplitPersonality; an infamous serial killer who has killed hundreds of men. Early on, Byakuya tasks himself with finding and ridding of Genocider Syo once and for all. The player is said to able to switch between Touko and Syo via a skill that comes and goes called "Sneeze".

Not yet playable in the demo.
----
* Anti-Hero: She’s a goddamn SerialKiller. This is to be expected.
* Boobs of Steel: Notably averted because she has the smallest bust of all the female party members, yet has the strongest physical attack, even stronger than the one who does have BoobsOfSteel, Aoi. You can say this fact is subverted, because the primary alter is a physically weak mage.
* GlassCannon: Even moreso than Touko.
* ShearMenace: Her WeaponOfChoice, of course. Wouldn't be good ol' Genocider without scissors now would she?
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: Downplayed, she seems this way, but Syo is not necessarily more powerful than Touko because they both have their uses. Touko herself is quite useful against regular enemies, but Syo can cause significant damage with just her regular attack, whereas Touko must use her SP in order to do anything.
* TokenEvilTeammate: She's a SERIAL KILLER, what did you honestly expect?
----
WMG:Aoi Asahina

Aoi is a fisherwoman in this AU who hails from Flotsam Port. She has lived a relatively normal and quiet life despite the activity of pirates in her area. The loss of her brother, however, has deeply troubled her and caused her to help the party out on their quest while hoping to find her brother along the way

Not yet playable in the demo.
----
* BladeOnAStick: Her WeaponOfChoice.
* BoobsOfSteel: Strongest physical fighter in the group, also has the largest breasts. This, however, is averted when Syo is in the picture, as she has even stronger physical attack power than Aoi, yet is the flattest.
* CombatMedic: This is her niche.
* GlassCannon: She has strong offensive power, but her defenses are below average.
* HairDecorations: A shell-shaped hair clip on her ponytail.
* MakingASplash: The only party member who can use water magic.
----
WMG:Kyouko Kirigiri

Kyouko is first spotted as Makoto and company are leaving Prospero City. She's trying to make it to Moonlight Town, but is blocked by large boulders.

Not yet playable in the demo.
----
* ArcherArchetype: She uses a bow as her weapon, and rather fits this description.
* JackOfAllStats: All of her stats are overall better than Makoto's except for Luck, but she falls under this.
* MageMarksman: Is a mage, and uses a bow as a weapon, making her fall under the Arcane Archer variant.
* MasterOfNone: She can take hits, use offensive magic, and even heal... however, anything she can do is done better by every other party member who can also do it. She has good stats, but Makoto has better Luck, Yasuhiro has better HP and defenses, Touko has better MP and Magic Attack, and Aoi has better Attack and Speed. Even Byakuya, another balanced character, has higher stats than her in some places.
* RedMage: She has both offensive and healing spells.

----
WMG:Komaru Naegi

Makoto’s sister. After the opening scene where she is shown as terrified of the Monokuma attack, she begs Makoto several times to allow her to join him, but he tells her no to keep her safe.
----
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Downplayed. She and Makoto get along well, but sometimes Komaru likes teasing him, to which Makoto displays clear annoyance to.
* BigBrotherWorship: Downplayed. She respects Makoto, but it’s not to the point of worship.
* CowardlyLion: Cowers in fear when Monokuma breaks in the house and attacks, but not long after bravely begs Makoto to let her help him.
* EasilyImpressed: Even moreso than her brother.
* GenreBlindness: She is extremely naive.
* NiceGirl: It seems to run in the family.
* PauperPatches: Has a patch on her dress.
----
WMG:Makoto and Komaru's parents

Makoto and Komaru’s parents, referred to in-game as "Mr. Naegi" and "Mrs. Naegi." As expected, they're just your average, well-meaning parents.
----
* AmazinglyEmbarassingParents: Right before Makoto and Yasuhiro leave for Prospero City, Mrs. Naegi reminds Makoto to change his underwear every day.
* GoodParents: In stark contrast to a majority of most of the other main characters’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Naegi care deeply about their children, if a bit overprotective of Komaru.
* MamaBear: Mrs. Naegi shows shades of this.
* OCStandIn: Downplayed. Their only appearance in the series is as Makoto’s motivational video near the beginning of Danganronpa. They have way more lines here than they did there.
* PapaWolf: Mr. Naegi. At the beginning of the game, he attempts to defend his family from the Monokuma that broke into their house. Makoto doesn’t allow him to though and fights the Monokuma himself instead.
* PauperPatches: Like their children, their clothes are patched up to show their poverty.
* SufferTheSlings: Mr. Naegi is all but stated to use slings for hunting. He also gives Makoto his first sling to equip.
* YourFavorite: Mrs. Naegi gives Makoto a Royal Curry item before he and Yasuhiro set out to Prospero City.
----
WMG:Chiaki Nanami

A mysterious girl with mysterious powers, who shows up at mysterious times, and says mysterious things. She helps guide Makoto and his friends, though in a very cryptic manner.
----
* CrypticConversation: She gives you cryptic hints that are more often than not, references to video games. The hints make no sense at first, but they turn out to be right later.
* FigureItOutYourself: She pulls this right before she leaves the Hope Village inn.
* HeavySleeper: She randomly falls asleep when you first meet her.
----
WMG:Mikan Tsumiki

A clumsy nurse that runs all the inns around the world. She heals patients that stay at her inns with her WhiteMagic while they're asleep.
----
* ApologizesALot: As she always is.
* OffscreenTeleportation: Revealed to do this via magic when you visit her in the Prospero City inn -- It's how she manages to run every inn in the world.
* WhiteMage: Must be a high-leveled one to be able to fully heal all her patients.
----
WMG:Kiyotaka Ishimaru

A knight employed by the Togami Kingdom, working under his father. He's first seen guarding the entrance to the castle grounds.
----

----
WMG:Takaki Ishimaru

Kiyotaka's father. A high-ranking knight employed by the Togami kingdom.
----

----
WMG:Kijou Togami

Byakuya's father, who is the current king of the Togami Kingdom.
----
* Jerkass: Now you know where his son gets it from.
* OC StandIn: Yet another downplayed example. The only things he gets in canon are a mention by Byakuya in the first Danganronpa, and then he’s given a name and a few lines in Danganronpa Togami. He doesn’t even have official art. In this, however, he’s given a design, and overall does more than he does in canon. Not much more though, but at least he actually appears on-screen.
* RoyalBlood: Like Byakuya, canonically he only has BlueBlood.
* SymbolMotifClothing: Like Byakuya, he has the 十 kanji everywhere.
----
WMG:Aloysius Pennyworth

The Togami Castle butler.
----
* BattleButler:
* BadassGrandpa: Though not a literal grandfather.
