* BladeOnAStick: Staff of Darkness

to:

* BladeOnAStick: His Staff of DarknessDarkness. It used to be Miserix's, but Teridax took it when he took over the Brotherhood.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In his first appearances, he was basically [[VideoGame/EarthBound Giygas]] and [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV Zeromus]] if they were a swirling mass of mechanical body parts. Nowadays, he's a much more conventional villain.villain with an eye for planning and gambits that that'd make [[VideoGame/KingdomHearts Xehanort]] and [[WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}} David Xanatos]] blush.

* MysteriousWatcher: He was chosen to watch over and protect the island of Metru Nui from harm; a great honor considering it was considered one of the most important location in the Matoran Universe [[spoiler:because that's where Mata Nui's "head" is located]]. He ended using said position to further his own plans for universal domination.

* TheResenter: Hated how, despite his actions to protect the Matoran and universe (regardless of his [[SociopathicHero methods]]), any and all praise was given to Mata Nui and the Toa. Eventually, he decided that he might as well become God himself and ''force'' them to give him respect.

* SociopathicHero: Before becoming a villain.

to:

* SociopathicHero: Before becoming a villain. Unlike Toa, he had no qualms with killing people who threatened the universe, from the reasonable (preparing to execute the Barraki for war crimes) to the extreme (trapping the leaders of the Matoran Civil War in Metru Nui inside the Archives before releasing the exhibits to kill them all). These tendencies likely played a role in how the Matoran never really gave him or the Brotherhood praise.

* XanatosGambit: He put the Great Spirit Mata Nui to sleep and on the verge of death while he took over in the power vacuum -- but if some heroes would arise to heal Mata Nui and wake him up again (something which Makuta was clever enough to expect would happen), then he could usurp the revival process and commit GrandTheftMe, essentially becoming the {{God}} of that world. ''Eight years of storyline'' passed before this was revealed.

* InvincibleVillain: Thok, when he realizes that Irnakk is actually standing right in front of the Piraka very much alive and not a myth, quickly wracks his brain for all the Skadi folklores about him in an effort to remember how Irnakk was defeated then...and remembers every story with Irnakk ends with his victims dead and him leaving unharmed. True to form, he easily defeats the Piraka and is only stopped by Zaktan threatening to kill himself and the others in order to deprive Irnakk of the fear it needs to live (since this version will only survive as long as the Piraka live to sustain its existence with fear).
* PrimalFear: His powers and very existence in the Skadi myths were meant to invoke this, bringing the darkest fears of his victims to life and killing them with it.
* YourMindMakesItReal: Or rather, your fears do. Zaktan realizes the only way to defeat him is to erase that fear from the equation, [[TakingYouWithMe by killing himself and his comrades to make him disappear]]. Irnakk, impressed by his resolve, lets them pass alive.

* PowerParasite: The Ignika cursed him with this while he had it, meaning no one could get within a certain radius while he was touching it or be drained of their stamina. Hakann is easily the worst; he's described as happy to look someone in the eyes and stab them in the back.back, and he had a role in ''every'' coup against Zaktan.

* TheWorfEffect: They easily take down the Toa Nuva, arguably the MOST POWERFUL Toa in the Bionicle universe. They struggle more with the Toa Inika, though it helps that they both underestimated these "newbie" Toa and the Inika received heads-up about their powers from the Matoran Resistance, which the Nuva never had.

* PragmaticVillainy: While he's not above leaving his allies in situations where their chances of survival are spotty at best, he never outright attempts to betray the other Piraka solely out of spite. He admits it's mostly because he believes he'll need all of them to help get the Mask of Life...and that they'll make good meatshields and distractions while he's escaping with it.

** GoodThingYouCanHeal: He can quickly divide his protodites if some of them are destroyed to regenerate lost parts, and since [[HiveMind each one contains part of his consciousness]], he only needs to have a [[FromASingleCell few of them]] to survive to eventually fully regenerate.

* TookALevelInDumbass: Losing Vezon cost him the intelligence that made him a GeniusBruiser in the past, forcing him to rely more on brute force and anger to get ahead. * TheBadGuyWins: By a technicality. [[spoiler:Their overall goal was to obtain the Mask of Life and use its energies to cure their mutations, escape the Pit, and once more walk about on land to rebuild their empires. While the Mask did elude their grasp, the Order of Mata Nui eventually paroled them to aid in fighting the Brotherhood, and they escaped to Spherus Magna where Mata Nui used the Ignika's energies to restore the planet. This in turn restored the surviving Barraki back to their original forms, with the added bonus of becoming amphibious, so in the end, they got everything they wanted, sans [[KilledOffForReal Caparar]]]]. ->It is said that all endings are merely beginnings waiting to be born. My beginning was much the same. Once I was a towering giant, ruler of my own universe. Fearless. Beholden to none. Protector of my people. Until I was betrayed. All that I had been, all that I had known, was stolen from me by an ever-present evil. My power stripped away, my people enslaved. I was left powerless to save them. And yet, a part of me survived. My spirit. Captured and preserved inside a mask worn by a Toa warrior, its name echoed my rebirth. The Mask of Life!

The Great Spirit who looked after the world, until he was put to sleep a thousand years ago by Makuta. He actually was a forty-million-foot living robot who housed the Matoran world within his body, built a hundred thousand years ago by the Great Beings and sent to wander space studying other planets and cultures, before returning to help restore the planet.

His body was taken over and his spirit exiled into space by Makuta, only to land on the desert planet Bara Magna. There, he adopted a normal-sized body in the form and title of his world's heroes. His mission was to get back to his realm and rescue his people from the evil that has claimed them. While he didn't have any special powers like real Toa would, the Mask of Life he wore could transform any organic material. Mata Nui only used this form temporarily, and eventually transferred his essence into the repaired prototype of his original body to face off against [[spoiler:and eventually kill Makuta. His godlike powers then undid the Shattering, restoring Spherus Magna into its original state. Mata Nui's spirit is currently lying dormant inside the Mask of Life.]]
* AllLovingHero / NiceGuy: There's nothing to hate about Mata Nui. Even in exile, he always puts everyone's needs before his own.

* BadassBaritone: Comes with being voiced by Creator/MichaelDorn.
* BroughtDownToBadass: After being exiled by Makuta, he is no longer a giant robot. However, he still has his fighting skills as a Glatorian and the power of the Mask of Life, and he uses both to maximum effect.
* [[spoiler:ButNowIMustGo / WeWillMeetAgain: In the conclusion of ''Journey's End'']]

* CoolMask / MaskOfPower: The Mask of Life
* CoolSword: Mata Nui used a Vorox stinger as a sword after reforging it with the Mask of Life.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: After the OpeningNarration of ''The Legend Reborn'' sets him up as once being the mighty ruler of a universe, it says a lot that his first onscreen act is to stop himself from squashing a bug, and try to befriend the lowly creature.

* TheGhost
* GodIsGood: One of the very few characters that can be considered a deity in the setting, and his benevolence goes without saying. He's not actually a deity, but is certainly a benevolent and powerful entity.
* GodsHandsAreTied: Mata Nui showing more interest in other worlds is what caused the world inside him to suffer a cataclysm event at the hands of Makuta Teridax, who injected Mata Nui with a virus of sorts that eventually put him to sleep causing him to crash land onto the water planet Aqua Magna.

* TheHero: Of the franchise as a whole, actually. Once the Toa awakened him, it was Mata Nui's job to stop Makuta once and for a all.
* HonorBeforeReason: With the fate of the universe at stake, Mata Nui, barely used to his new body and armed with a shield and a broken stinger, jumps into arena combat to save a Glatorian he didn't know.

His HumongousMecha body is roughly forty million feet (7,575 mi or 12,192 km) tall and had a camouflage system that created an island on his face. Mata Nui was able to control specific things like gravity and light within his body.
* PresentAbsence: He was always there, it's just that he was sleeping.
* ShouldersOfDoom: In his "Toa" form.
* SleptThroughTheApocalypse: with a twist; his falling asleep plummets him into Aqua Magna, in turn causing the apocalypse inside his body during his unconsciousness. He does eventually wake up, but only for Makuta to steal his body.
* SuperEmpowering: He's able to use the Mask of Life to [[spoiler: charge Glatorian Weapons with elemental powers,]] giving them an edge over the Skrall.

* AGodIAmNot: Mata Nui seems to view himself more as a leader to the races inside his body than as a deity. In fact, at the very end of the main Bionicle story arc, [[spoiler: he chooses not to create himself a new body because he doesn't want the new Matoran-Agori society to become too dependent on him.]]
* AscendedExtra: Mata Nui's went from being the omnipotent but incapacitated BigGood to TheHero of the Bara Manga saga.

* CainAndAbel: The Legend of Mata Nui portrayed him as Abel, with Makuta as Cain. However, the legend was eventually RetConned into a bogus tale of the Turaga. [[spoiler:Doubly subverted, as the two were ''truly'' meant to be brothers in that they were supposed to work together to rebuild Spherus Magna, and Makuta refused all of Mata Nui's requests to work together.]]
* CoolButInefficient: There is one AlternateUniverse where the Great Beings created the Matoran, Toa, and others directly and had them repair the damage caused by the Core War, preventing the Shattering. Comparatively, building a giant robot half the size of {{Europe}}, having it study the cosmos, and repair the broken planet 100,000 years hence seems like a huge case of ComplexityAddiction.

Added DiffLines:

* BadassNormal: Zaktan was an oddity amongst Skadi at one point, due to seemingly having only a vision-based power (which was simple laser vision) and an elemental power over air (which was impossible to use unless in conjecture with another Skadi) with no third power in sight. Despite this, the Shadowed One personally oversaw his training and assigned him to a team of Dark Hunters meant to capture and kill Toa. He lost this trope after he finally unlocked his [[TheWormThatWalks true power]].
* CursedWithAwesome: How he views his [[TheWormThatWalks protodite body]]. It made him easily a hundred times a more powerful and vicious Dark Hunter than ever before, but it came at the cost of everyone, even his own comrades, forever viewing him as a monster and alien. He occasionally talks about waking up from dreams of having a flesh-and-metal body only to remember that now he's pretty much a walking, talking bacteria factory.
* ImAHumanitarian: One of Avak's flashbacks involve describing how Zaktan once dragged off a particularly stubborn Toa prisoner before returning sometime later alone. When Avak went to investigate, all he found were broken pieces of armor, a mask that looked half-''eaten'', and puddles of something he did not stop to identify.
* NoOneShouldSurviveThat: Zaktan is the only being known whose wasn't a Makuta that survived a direct hit from the Shadowed One's [[DisintegratorRay disintegration eyebeams]], [[TheWormThatWalks though it would be false to state that he got out unscathed]]. Everyone present at the execution (including the Shadowed One himself) was utterly gobsmacked when he managed to literally pull himself back together, and even in the present the Shadowed One admits that he doesn't know if his beams somehow altered him or if he always had the power but dormant (but also professed a desire to dissect him and find out).

* GloryHound: Obsessed with earning power and prestige to the point he'd gladly take credit for other people's accomplishments, like how he did with Roodaka's capture and mutation of the Toa Hagah to become the King of the Visorak Horde with her as his viceroy. One wonders if that played a role in her planned betrayal and his death.

* BalefulPolymorph: Her Rhotuka Spinner's power produces permanent grotesque transformations in her victims that only reversible by another hit from them.
