** Maybe he's gay, maybe he's unwilling to utilize his PopularityPower to get into bed with someone because he sees it as shallow, or maybe he's [[UsefulNotes/{{Asexuality}} asexual]]. Love seems to confuse him. Maybe it's because of how young everyone is, or perhaps he really ''does'' love Amy, but [[TheDrifter isn't ready to settle down yet]] and/or [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies doesn't want Robotnik to pick up on said affections and]] [[IHaveYourWife kidnap]] (and possibly hurt, or even '' kill'') [[IHaveYourWife Amy]] [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies just to get to him]]. [[labelnote:+]]Sure, Amy is quite capable of taking care of herself, but who says Robotnik couldn't send in an army to overwhelm her or plan an ambush to capture her without even allowing her a chance to fight back? The guy ''is'' a genius; he can probably come up with a tactically sound plan, even if his immaturity usually gets in the way.[[/labelnote]] Sonic, however, has already shown some signs of interest in some female characters; examples would include some heavy subtext with Blaze the Cat and some playful flirting with Rouge the Bat. Sonic does flirt with Rouge in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' for the GBA, and then you could say Rouge flirts with everyone and means nothing by it, he was just giving her a taste of her own medicine.

** In the ''Black Knight'' installment of the ''VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries'', Sonic is initially intimidated by the appearance of the Lady of the Lake (a lookalike of Amy Rose) and even attempts to flee, but soon after he gets over his initial shock, he cozies right up to her -- on top of that, the game's epilogue reveals he was scheduled for an honest-to-goodness date with Amy Rose herself.

* When teaching Shadow how to use weapons in ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'', he notes that he wouldn't be caught dead using them, yet he picks up a sword in ''[[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries Sonic and the Black Knight]]'' without a word of complaint. Is his aversion to [[DoesntLikeGuns guns specifically]], or is he swallowing his personal distaste to do as the Romans do?

** Dr Starline can be considered a crazed stalker/fanboy of Dr Eggman who is in love with the man. He goes as far as to forgo sleep just to find him, tries to revert Mr Tinker back to Dr Eggman and happily serves him until Eggman takes his Warp Topaz and fires him for trying to use The Deadly Six to control the Zombots. He takes his rejection poorly and even Zavok tells him he doesn't need Dr Eggman. Even when he tries to be his own villain, his plans are based off Dr Eggman and he has a relapse when he discovers that [[spoiler:Dr Eggman still kept his Starline figure, which the mad platypus steals for himself]].
** Another interpretation is that in contrast to [[TheSociopath Dr Eggman]], Dr Starline is a psychopathic narcissist who relies on Dr Eggman for validation. After being fired, his Vlogs show him ranting and raving about how Dr Eggman just couldn't see his genius and his hatred of Metal Sonic shows how he resents being less important than a mere machine. Despite his claims that he's better than Dr Eggman, he makes the same mistakes he does and the majority of his plans are reliant on or based off his former idol's plans.

* Is he really nothing more than just a cold hearted killing machine incapable of feeling emotions or is he just the sad result of being created by Eggman and programed for an evil purpose who is just doing what he was programed to do and doesn't know the difference between right and wrong? ''Sonic Heroes'' might have just been Metal finally realising he was just a tool to Eggman and finally breaking free, but due to his 'Kill Sonic' programming still being present in him and possibly because Metal has been around Eggman his whole existence, all Metal knows about is conquering, destroying, and killing Sonic, so he probably didn't know what else to do now that Eggman wasn't pulling the strings. Not to mention Metal was possibly having an identity crisis in ''Heroes''. Shadow, who was created by Eggman's's grandfather Gerald, is a good point of comparison. Shadow was partly created for a good reason (mainly in finding a cure for Maria's illness), and Maria was also a large impact in Shadow's life, as she was there and able to teach him about some parts of what's right and wrong. Metal Sonic, on the other hand, was solely created for an evil reason and has had no positive role model.

* Sega's own employees are not exempt from this, some say that Sonic's a nature-loving hero with great appreciation for beauty and relaxation, and some say that he's so hyperactive he can never sit still, let alone sit and look at the scenery, some also say he's a loner and likes his peace, while others say he's gregarious and likes a lively atmosphere.
