Sara: I disagree that this trope is Always Female. It's usually shown happening to women on TV, but I can recall a few instances where it happens to men (ex: Wayne on The Wonder Years invites a girl over for a date but she never shows up). And in real life it can happen to either.
Leo: There's actually another type, the "You've Got Mail" or "In the Good Old Summertime" or "Shop Around the Corner" type. This is a bit too hard to describe in a sentence or two.
