Working Title: Percussive Repair: From YKTTW

Sniffnoy: Hm. I can't find a good index for this one. Anyone?

Sci Vo: I do my best to keep Universal Tropes small, but this looks like one. That or Applied Phlebotinum.

Shay Guy: Ah...I would've named it Percussive Maintenance. But "repair" was the proposed title, and people went with the Fonz, so...eh.

Troper: I'd support a move to Percussive Maintenance. It's a descriptive title, and one recognized fairly widely.

Stuart P. Bentley: As would I.

Forum thread leading up to rename from Fonzarelli Fix

Tyrfing: Shouldn't the opening line read:
Tapping the car with a hammer: $0.00. Knowing where to hit it: Priceless.
...unless you weren't trying to invoke images of mastercard ads.

Paul A: I think it's actually a reference to an old joke: A master mechanic is called in to repair a car. He looks it over for a few minutes, taps the engine block once with a hammer, and says, "That will be $5,000." Although the car now works perfectly, the customer is a bit miffed by the price and insists on an itemised bill showing exactly how tapping the car with a hammer is worth $5,000...

Duckay: I've also heard the joke with the punchline "Hitting with hammer: $0.10. Knowing where to hit it: $4999.90."

Fallingwater: the main article says percussive maintenance is mostly useless on modern electronics. I disagree - it's quite useful when the trouble lies in imperfect solder joints. Kicking the device can then actually make it work (momentarily at least), and one of the techniques used to find just where the problem is is to tap the electronic boards randomly until the problem goes away.
