Ununnilium: For Kingdom Hearts, would this be Destiny Islands (the literal first town) or Traverse Town (which otherwise seems to fit the trope better)?
How exactly are the Pokemon games an example of this? The character rarely ever returns to his tiny hometown, and it's pretty much the town in which there's the LEAST amount of stuff to do. You only return there once for the plot, and that's after you beat the game. Well, except for the games that take place in Johto, because you do have to go there an additional time after you get the eighth badge in order to go on to the Pokemon League.
