Lale: Would it be copyright infringement to paste the List here with embedded links to the trope that applies to each item?

Silent Hunter: Probably, yes, unless we got permission.

Jack Butler: Pax Vobiscum. You have my permission. Isn't it nice to have one of the originators of the thing as a troper?

Fast Eddie:Based on IP address, no reason to assume we've been fauxed. Thanks, Jack!

Jack Butler: Sure, no worries. By the by, my list isn't under copyright.

Fast Eddie: The posted terms are attribution-with-notice, as-is. The as-is part might be a little tough for us. The value we have to add would be the tropes and examples, which we could do without changing the Evil Overlord items themselves. Like so:

  1. My Legions of Terror will have helmets with clear plexiglass visors, not face-concealing ones.

Lale: I was thinking more like-

  1. My Legions of Terror will have helmets with clear plexiglass visors, not face-concealing ones.
  2. My ventilation ducts will be too small to crawl through.

Fast Eddie: Maybe both approaches. We will have more than a few instances of tropes per entry. // later: I've added the attribution. On my way to copy in the list ... // later yet: Okay, have at it.

Silent Hunter: The list has over 200 entries in (see the Dungeons on the site). Might be a good idea to include them.

arromdee: See The Grand List Of Console Role Playing Game Cliches for how we handle a similar list for video games. It ended up having to be split to avoid load on the server from looking up all those links to figure out that they're blue.

arromdee: The Dungeons are really part of the list. I think they should go in.

Lord Seth: Why does it only have the first 100 and not the later ones? It seems kind of strange when Birnam Wood To Dunsinane lists #153 and includes a link to this page...and then there is no 153 because it only lists the first 100.

Lale: The longer a page gets, the harder it is to get an edit through.

Morgan Wick: It should be noted that Peter Anspach did not create the Evil Overlord list... he merely copyrighted it out from under those people who actually did write it. Wikipedia only has Anspach's side of the story (that was always on his Evil Overlord site), but it leaves me with the impression this is less sinister than implied. Unless, of course, he really IS an Evil Overlord... :D

Jack Butler: The truth is, his copyright is impossible to enforce, and thus holds no legal force, because of the existence of my list. As the Wikipedia article says, our two lists are now pretty much identical because of cross-pollenation. And since I refuse to even consider claiming copyright on my list, you can do what you want with it, publish it anyway you want with it, and when Peter Anspach comes a callin', can claim that you're dealing with my list, and thus are immune to being hassled. See how it works?

Rebochan: I don't see the point in including what appears to be a minefield of web drama on the front page. If we're reproducing his list, we do have to include the notice, especially because we've reproduced his entire website here. If you uploaded your own website here, that would be different. If nothing else, it's common courtesy.

Incompleteness: Number 96 seems rather shaky, it replaces standard stupid evil overlord behaviour with something non-standard which could just as easily be abused by smart heroes. I don't suppose we can edit it in the the 'as-is' list?

Rebochan: I've reverted edits to number 84 a few times. Not that I disagree with the edits - all of them have rightly pointed out that using guards of the same sex wouldn't prevent the seduction of a guard by the imprisoned hero if the guards are gay. I think the idea of not editing the list here is to keep it from running amok with other people's ideas of what should and shouldn't be here. Providing other pages for it makes more sense to me.

Pyrix: Number 46 seems possibly contradictory to the other sensible Evil Overlord items. Is there some possibility that this one is incorrect or not well thought out?
