The Bad and the Good.

Twilight may not be as well written as some of the other literary pieces out there, but in my opinion, it's still worth a read. It's not the best thing out there and there are tons of flaws, but it's still a guilty pleasure. People complain that every other sentence is about Edward's looks, but if they actually read the book they would know that that's not true. It's a romance; of course it's going to focus on Edward and Bella! It's a bit sickening in the beginning, but it gets better.

The second book was where Stephanie made a mistake. Bella suffers a breakdown for months all because her boyfriend left. The only real reason New Moon was written was so Jacob and Bella could go through some love brewing, which makes Jacob imprinting on Renesmee all the more disturbing.

The third was the best of all; it had the perfect balance of action and romance. I personally can't wait for the movie's take on the story. The love triangle is prominent, and it's interesting to see how it plays out.

As for Breaking Dawn, it's written better than the rest of the series. It's too bad the story isn't as good as the third book. The best section was that narrated by Jacob. It was interesting to get a look into the "pack mind" and to hear Jacob's internal struggles.

ON TO OTHER ASPECTS:

Some call Edward abusive. Never does he hit her, call her names, put her down or act like she's lesser than him. In Midnight Sun you can see that he doesn’t think he's good enough for Bella. He treats her like a child on some occasions because she has a bad habit of getting herself into trouble. He tries to protect her (and ends up hurting her in the case of New Moon) but it's because he doesn’t want to lose her.

Bella is a Mary Sue. That's all I have to say, because personally I can't stand the way she acts. She's ditsy and stupid, but then again, so is the average teenage girl; WHICH IS WHAT STEPHANIE’S TRYING TO PORTRAY.

Overall; Tons of flaws, semi-good writing and a story line that could use some work. The Twilight Series is a guilty pleasure, and that's all it is. My ratings?

  • Twilight: 6/10
  • New Moon: 8/10
  • Eclipse: 10/10
  • Breaking Dawn: 5/10

I understand your rating I particularly liked New Moon the less, but that is a personal matter and even though I agree that Eclipse is the more balanced of them all I think it was also unnecessary. New Moon could have had Edward's absence being shorter and then have Victoria do her thing and the book would had been thicker but a lot better. And I loved Breaking Dawn not sure why people didn't liked the story it was nice to see Bella and Edward relaxed at the beginning finally consummating their relationship (hated the fade to black thought) and later how they dealt with the very real possibility of losing it all and having no regrets also Edward was a lot relaxed and a more affectionate that probed that all his issues were mostly due to Bella's humanity and once she was a powerful and sexy vampire he could managed to be himself around him instead of the drama king he used to be, also Bella stopped whining about her looks finally and I think she did a great job as a young unexpected mother and I adore Reneesme! I think that even if is not finished I would rank Midnight Sun as the best one of the saga so far maybe a tie between it and Twilight.

Great review very level headed and honest! Kudos!

All I've got to say is that you don't have to hit someone or call them names to be abusive. Just take a look at Edward pulling a piece of Bella's engine out of her car just so she couldn't see a friend of hers and try to say that it's not controlling and far from okay. Edward is abusive in the sense that he isolates Bella from her friends and controls nearly every aspect of her life.

Umm... I tried to read Twilight once. I never got past page 6. It was that bad.

Edward totally insults Bella! He calls her stupid at least six times in the first book at least.

...he does hit her. The sex scene from breaking dawn, her entire body is covered in bruises.

The argument is actually that Edward is emotionally controlling rather than physically abusive. People say this because he makes decisions for Bella, forced her to stay home so she couldn't see Jacob, and several other things. Read more here.

I'm alive and less annoying than ever before.

While I disagree with both several of your points and your overall ratings, I want to tell you that I am happy to see a defense of Twilight that was done calmly and rationally and with limited caps-lock.

I do however think Edwards is abusive if you look at him as being emotionally abusive, condescending, and controlling.

I did not read Eclipse of BD (because I had gotten so sick of it by New Moon) but I have heard that Eclipse is the only one with redeeming value (even if Mew Moon go the best cover, IMO).

"he does hit her. The sex scene from breaking dawn, her entire body is covered in bruises"

That doesn't necessarily constitute hitting. It does sound like abuse, though. Bruises are a natural offshoot of sex, but not so much all over.

Every teenage girl is ditzy and stupid? As a teenage girl in honors classes, I'm afraid I have to disagree.

The problem is that nearly everyone loves Bella, despite her being ditzy, stupid and not caring about others.

How is Eclipse better than the first? No how are any of them better than the first?

I still find the first to be a turd, don't get wrong but at least there...

A) Bella tried to do more than just be obsessed with Edward, though not much more,it's enough to count as Flanderization

B) Edward was nowhere near as abusive and mostly reclusive

C) Jacob and Charlie were both still nice guys, but they both got derailed in Eclipse

D) The prose seemed to suggest Meyer did consider having an actual plot, but with her Small Name Big Ego decided quickly how stupid that was

E) James was actually a decent villain who did anything, what did any of the others do?

F) Most of the flawed counterarguments that Edward isn't abusive could be traced back to this book. Unless of course this is the book where he steals her car engine

G) The prose overall was better, the other books reek of Protection From Editors

That said you're still comparing a turd to a tsunami of stale pee.

I think all humans have their stupid and ditzy moments. The problem is that teenage girls are not always allowed the same grace to be human as everyone else.
