About the Unintentionally Unsympathetic trope, is Wade killing Samantha’s avatar really does come across like that? I mean, they both know that it needed to be done, even if Art3mis didn't like it. Wade sounds concerned that Samantha is about to be discovered by Sorrento, and even as he aim his gun at her, he still needs to psych himself up to actually pull the trigger, all this while IOI mooks are raining fire on them. And finally, Art3mis doesn't hold any grudge over Wade having to do what he did when they meet again later in the real world.

I don’t really find that Wade did it because he feel like to, or that he doesn’t feel any regret by doing so (the guy did fall for Samantha's avatar form before they even meet in the real world, after all). And it was a decision made in the heat of battle, what with Sorrento going crazy in the real world and IOI mooks firing on them in OASIS. Wade needs to get things done as quick as possible as it's not only Samantha's fate that's at stake but also his and Sho's and arguably all of OASIS. Are other viewers actually find Wade patronizing in that scene?

If anything, I find that Wade getting over his aunt’s death pretty quickly (enough that the following scene where he finds Samantha in the real world, he’s still cheerily enough to romance her as if the previous scene where he barely avoided the Stack falling over and being kidnapped never happened) even weirder than the scene where he kills Art3mis. Just wondering.

It just came off as "I'm your man, I know what's good for you better than you do" to me, and I've spoken to others who feel the same.

It’s not that different from earlier in the film where Samantha opted to stay behind to distract the IOI hit squad. She elected to have Wade go through the air duct first before forcibly closing and locking the hatch from the outside, ensuring that he has no choice but to escape alone no matter how much he wanted her to go with him. Wade’s just doing what she did to him only in OASIS (complete with Meaningful Echo). Granted, while it’s not exactly the same because in Samantha’s case, her avatar lost everything she had, she’s already established that she’s willing to zero out if it means that she could stop the IOI. Wade’s just trying to ensue that she won’t also lose her life in the real world for real as well. He would know because he just lost his aunt recently. He knows what Sorrento is capable of, and Samantha’s expression makes it clear that Sorrento is closing in on her fast. If she stays there, she’s definitely dead.

They both did something that the other didn't particularly like, but it's made pretty clear that they didn't feel happy about doing so, either, and they don't hold it against each other later in the story in both cases.

Hey y'all, I added a blurb on the lack of properties starring women or people of colour from being included in the Ready Player One film and put it under Internet Backdraft. It got deleted, but I've re-instated it, as a cursory Google search of "ready player one whiteness" (without the quotes) provides articles from as diverse sources as African-American news/lifestyle site The Root right up to Forbes Magazine. I've included a handful from the first page of the list below. I understand some of y'all may see this as "SJW bullshit", but understand, EVERYONE loved the shit out of Madonna and The Cosby Show in the 80s, and not even a pair of chandelier earrings or a Cosby sweater show up, at all ? That's messed up.

I think Michael Jackson's mentioned at one point, according to one of the TV Tropes pages. Also, you probably know about the allegations with Cosby.

Maybe you should read your sources better, because the Forbes article is very explicit in saying that, well... there's no Unfortunate Implications on display in the movie. Maybe don't link sources that contradict your argument?

As for The Root and TMS, they're such hogwash that including them as reputable sources is laughable, and the Forbes article litterally shows why the Bustle article is complete hogwash as well. So yeah, I'd be all for removing it.

Pulling this for now:

  • Critical Research Failure: Many fans have accused the movie of this with regards to the titular robot from The Iron Giant being shown blowing things up with his gun in a battle sequence, considering the central character trait of the Iron Giant himself and the entire point of the story he's from is that he hates being a weapon.

Because we don't know exactly how it's played. I suspect that it's going to wind up being either CRF or Do Not Do This Cool Thing or some other "completely missing the point of The Iron Giant" but we don't know yet.

The added bullet states that it's just an avatar used by a character and not the Iron Giant himself. So any complaint aimed toward the Iron Giant's "unfaithful depiction" is really a kneejerk reaction. Zap it for now.
