Consolidation Thread

Since it doesn't look like the general lock is going to lift anytime soon, let's try and put together specific edits that can be submitted ad hoc to the locked article edit request thread. Even if the admins are too skittish to unlock the articles writ large, they'll probably be less opposed to focused changes like "Hey, this line hyping up the T14 Armata should probably be changed to reflect the fact that it doesn't exist."

Polite People - the New Russian Army in Action: Change to simply "The New Russian Army in Action." Conduct since 2022 has made the "polite" moniker in extremely poor taste.

Starting in 2012, the Russian military deployed in support of the Assad regime in the Syrian Civil War. While their public reasoning for intervening was nominally the containment of ISIS, over time their focus proved to be more on destroying anti-Assad rebels. By and large, Syria has been a proving ground for the Russian military's technology and tactics, with mixed results. Technologically, a number of systems saw their first combat deployments, and the conflict was an excellent training ground for Russian pilots pefroming airstrikes. Doctrinally, Syria demonstrated that the Russian approach to conflict had changed little since the Chechnya Wars - rather than engage in protracted urban conflicts against entrenched rebel forces, they instead leveled urban centers from uncontested airspace.

ARMATA Universal Combat Platform: After the turn of the century, Russian military planners were faced with the problem of an aging and technologically obsolete vehicle fleet coupled with declining budget and manufacturing capabilities. To solve both problems, the ARMATA platform was developed as a one-size-fits-all modular chassis that could be shared between the T-14 MBT, T-15 and Kurganets-25 IF Vs, BTR Bumerang, 2S35 SPA, and other support vehicles. While held up as examples of Russia's returning technological edge, the family has become a case study in issues with Russia's modern military industry - massive cost overruns, decades-long production delays, and high-profile failures of prototype systems.note  While the Ukrainian Conflict has increased pressure to deliver, the status of ARMATA-based systems and their deployment to combat remains ambiguous as of 2023.

SU-57 "Felon": A Russian 5th Generation air superiority fighter, and the first Russian jet to incorporate stealth technology; it is roughly analogous in role and capability to the American F-22. As with most modern Russian aircraft, it places a strong emphasis on maneuverability, with its ability to perform a Cobra Maneuver an airshow favorite. As with most modern Russian systems, however, it's also plagued by production delays - as of 2023, only 32 have been built.

How about the AK-12, which originally was supposed to be an AK-400 based platform that's completely different from the current iteration, which is an AK-200 based platform that represents only an incremental upgrade over the AK-74M.

Honestly, I don't wonder if the whole section should get scrapped. Doktor Soviet dumped a massive fanboy spiel that just... is badly written. Instead of "correcting" it it would be better to reformat it entirely to actually reflect a point.

The "Rockets Repainted" section would be better suited to address how the Russian military in the 00s/10s tried to get back on its feet with new weapons programs to accompany the structural reforms, which altogether would have built a Russian military that could maintain its superpower status and military reputation while accounting for the economic reality of the post-Soviet era.

This could then lead into a "Rust Underneath" section, which then addresses how those reform programs didn't come to fruition and just covered up the festering corruption, and a brief discourse on how badly the Russian military has been mangled since 2022. Somewhere in there needs to be a mention of PMC Wagner and its counterparts, since it was a huge part of Russian military/foreign strategy through the 10s until its rebellion and dissolution.

Taking a line from the Useful Notes!Yanks With Tanks article, it might be handy to reformat into:

  • How the Rockets Rusted
    • Slimmed version of what's currently in the article, with better emphasis on the context of WHY there's a distinction between the Russian/Soviet militaries (looting of the 90s, reforms, consolidation)
  • Russian Military Organizations
    • Ground Forces, Aerospace Forces, Naval Forces
    • Strategic Rocket Force, Airborne Forces
    • SOF (noting that it's different from Spetsnaz GRU)
    • PM Cs (Wagner, in the past tense)
  • Russian Equipment
    • Adopt the same style as Yanks with Tanks: break down equipment by blocks.
    • Cross-reference back to Useful Notes!Russians With Rifles for Soviet-era gear, with some explanation of upgrades and modernization
    • Describe new programs (T-14 Armata) in the context required to know what they are and what they claimed to be, in addition to the "But actually, they're garbage" conclusion
  • Russian Military Culture
    • Military service in a Russian context - less "pride in service" and more "no better options"
    • Conscription, contract soldiers, officers, and PM Cs
    • Corruption and its Impacts

T 90 M got mission killed by a pair of M2 bradleys using their bushmasters. This article needs to be unlocked because it is way too glowing for an army that has been rolled up like a rug a lot of the time.

Jesus this article thinks the T14 armata exists.

It was written by either a Russian or someone with a SEVERE mental disability.

I still can’t get over the fact it says the Su-57 is comparable or superior to the F22. That is insane.

The polite people thing needs to go too. Incompetent war criminals should not be described as polite, simply killed.

Indeed, the Epic Fail of Putin's invasion is a marvel to behold. This is what happens when a dictator starts believing his own hype.

There is not a single person that has ever thought the Su-57 is comparable to an F22

It has an RCS over a square meter on the patent.

It’s like 4th Gen at best but considering Russia has lost fourth Gen planes to MANPADS I don’t even know how to make fun of their garbage Air Force.

It’s fucking baffling. They’re worried about premature commentary but like the article as it stands is COMPLETELY DIVORCED FROM REALITY.
