  • Word of Gay: Kanaya is confirmed by Word of God to be gay: although trolls do not have a concept of sexual orientation, maleness is a deal-breaking turnoff for her.

This is iffy.

Going by its description, this trope refers to characters who are indistinguishable from heterosexuals in the source material, and are (quoting from its trope page) "Ambiguously Gay at most". It's related to Unfortunate Implications, since it means the creator wanted to be able to claim credit for representing LGBT people but too chickenshit to actually do it in the work.

This is a completely different situation, where a creator clarifies that a character who visually appears to be gay actually is gay (rather than panromantic like most of her species) and would not be attracted to anyone male-like. She is not "at most Ambiguously Gay," she is considerably more than Ambiguously Gay.

Word of Gay is a negative trope used to criticize an author's hypocrisy, and this author is not guilty of that. He was distinguishing the gay character from the bi characters, not from the straight ones.

I didn't change it now, but I wanted to raise the point and see what others thought.
