I posit that The Spectacular Spider-Man is more a case of Multiple Demographic Appeal than Periphery Demographic. After Weisman's previous shows had serious PD appeal, I think SSM decided to roll with it and intentionally appeal to the older viewers as well. The numerous instances of Getting Crap Past the Radar, Mythology Gags, and Shoutout To Shakespeare make me feel like even though it wasn't made strictly for the older crowd, it was at least done with them in mind.
