Would the Sheltered Aristocrat also be considered a male Ingenue? That trope is also described as being innocent and naive.
Edited by Timjames98"Nowadays, the ingenue is parodied or subverted more often than not, because in this day and age it isn't plausible for an unsheltered girl to be completely innocent." It just angers me how society now laughs at ingenue girls and women while celebrating promiscuous ones.
Hello Hide / Show RepliesOr maybe, it's because the ingenue never existed to begin with, and it was just an unrealistic stereotype by sheltered male story-writers with no actual experience with women?
I agree with the original comment- from how I understand the trope, the ingenue is a personality type/ character archetype that just begets innocence. It doesn't necessarily mean stupidity or anything particularly negative. But that phrase would say it's impossible to remain pure today which I do have a problem with. Heck, I think I disagree with the statement that there's no make equivalent. An innocent, pure, duty-bound male would just be a Idealistic or classical hero. And believe me, the ingenue exists in real life today- I think I know a few.
I think you do not understand what is meant by "innocent" here. It's the classical meaning of the word, closer to today's "naive", and lightly pejorative. In this sense, the antonym of innocence is not promiscuity, it is being sexually aware. And whilst I'm not sure that there is no male equivalent, it's not an idealistic hero, who may be chaste or faithful but is not archetypically ignorant of sex (I'm thinking more of Oblivious to Love).
And I don't see that society celebrates promiscuity today. At most it accepts it or plays it for laughs. Few films or television series have a sympathetic protagonist who is genuinely promiscuous (though there are enough such sympathetic side characters).
A blog that gets updated on a geological timescale.I'm removing Dawn Star from Jade Empire. She is somewhat inexperienced about the world, but then so is the player character. Her romance arc does not show any prudishness or naiveté.
If anyone can make a case for her inclusion, state that clearly instead of "seems like an example".
A blog that gets updated on a geological timescale.Do the "negative connotations" associated with Manchild really constitute the DoubleStandard? The Manchild is lazy and immature. That's part of what makes him a manchild. An ingenue need not be lazy or immature, just innocent.
Just tried to use this word in one of my stories. Microsoft Word read it as misspelled, and its correction was "ingénue". I've submitted a customization request.
Q: What Pokémon is good at treating colds? A: Cyn-Day-Quil®How is Taylor Swift "the epitome of this trope"? Maybe her on-stage persona is, but even in that case it doesn't belong in the "real life" section.
Heck, there's even a "seems like an example" in Video Games....I'm almost tempted to make a TRS topic.

Is this strictly female? Are there such things as male Ingenues? Just wondering.
