In my high-school choir class, the teacher lectured about art history and we were discussing the Mona Lisa, and why her smile is so priceless. He posed the question, "Is that a smile of divine purity, or is she flirting?" And that single question encapsulated the appeal of her smile: The mystery of it is irresistible. You can't tell which one the smile represents.

- A short story (whose name escapes me) has a team of archaeologists discovering another Mona Lisa in an Italian cave. Comparison with the original shows that the new one has the subject's arms in a slightly different position, so they explore the cave further and find a whole stack of paintings, each one again with the arms having moved from the previous one, lifting towards the neck of her gown until in the final painting she has opened the gown to expose her breasts. They also find a machine, presumably designed and built by Leonardo, which presents each picture in turn to the observer at one-second intervals when a crank handle is turned. In other words, the Mona Lisa we have is just one frame from the world's first porn movie!
