  • Touhou has a mild example of this, in that the exact layout of the danmaku during certain attacks depends on the whim of the RNG, though due to the way they work, there is always an opening somewhere. Early title Lotus Land Story is particularly bad about this, though - not only does it not have the limit of later games that ensures there is always an opening (thus potentially giving you completely unavoidable waves), it has an entire Luck Based Boss in the form of Marisa in stage 4 - she has a ton of attack patterns, and which one she uses at any given time is entirely up to the whims of the RNG. She's the only boss in any Touhou game apart from the spinoffs that is completely impossible to memorize. Marisa can either be a pushover or a brutal, brutal fight - and if you think you can just avoid her by playing as Marisa instead, the game responds by giving you a straight-up That One Boss.

I have trouble believing this. Would anyone care to source this example? I'm withholding this example until someone can prove it.

Fixed. Image links are case-sensitive now, so capitalising the file extension made it work.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

  • Megaupload.com's CAPTCHAs.
    • Meh, could be worse. they could involve cats and have you try and figure out which letters you're supposed to pick out. irony being what it was, Rapidshare got more bot downloads than human downloads when they had the CATCHAs on their site, which defeated the whole purpose of a CAPTCHA to begin with. Rapidshare no longer has any CAPTCHAs.
    • That's hardly the only website where you'll run into them. Try LiveJournal, where you have to enter a CAPTCHA if you're not logged in. There was a period where every other CAPTCHA contained things like accented letters and Greek symbols. If you got one of these untypeable CAPTCHAs, pretty much the only option was to refresh the CAPTCHA screen until you got something that you could actually type.
Complaining about captchas you don't like?

  • In Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King, the final mission is a boss fight against Gollum. The only way to kill him was to (As Frodo) work with Sam to push him over the edge, then stab him with a killing move multiple times. Now, this sounds fine in theory, but since only the AI possessed the magical button that made Gollum lean back over the edge so you could hit him off, and since half of the time he thought it would be more useful to parry endlessly at nothing, throw daggers at him (Which bounced off like he was iron man) or simply to knock him away from the edge you were trying to push him off of, the level was so wholly out of the Player Character's control as to induce psychosis.
    • Uhh....or you could press the Push Button. Which was the same one used to push off the Ladders.

Because the second comment means this wasn't luck based at all. I checked out a strategy guide and the strategy guide confirmed it. There's an easy sequence of steps you do to knock him off on your own effort and skill

I have a screenshot of Window's 7 minesweeper with a luck-based scenario on it. It's on expert mode too. http: //img155.imageshack.us/img155/2087/grrminesweeper.png I don't know what kind of permission you need to change the image though. Maybe they'll end up sticking with old minesweeper just because of that taunting smily face.

There's the smiley face, and there's also the fact it's much easier to understand with a glance. Also, the dimensions of the picture (Even if resized) would be somewhat annoying.

  • Canabalt - Run with ever-increasing speed on rooftops trying to predict what the level randomizer will throw at you from offscreen and calculate jumps accordingly.
I don't think Canabalt is really an example; you can slow yourself down by deliberately tripping on a crate or another object.
