If a villain purposefully rejects/sabotages/foils the hero's attempt to Save the Villain and dies smiling because he knows that he emotionally/psychologically hurt the hero with his death, would it count as a subversion, inversion, or just a dark version of this trope?

So far as the trope isn't specific that it has to be smiling at the killer or loved ones, specifically, I would characterize it as just a darker version of the general trope. Perhaps a sub trope would be denying the killer the satisfaction of getting the best of someone, emotionally, even just before death. What do you think?
