The description makes it sound like this is usually a bad thing/unintentional, but in a lot of places, the mix of comedy and drama is intentional. One serves to highlight the other, and the contrast is what makes it work. Something that's purely a comedy or purely a drama would be unwatchable, at least to me. Code Geass, K, and Black Butler (to name some of my favorites) all have this and it isn't an accident, or bad writing. It's done intentionally, and that's what gives the story and the characters life.

I really hope RWBY goes this route without going to the extend of Vol. 3's levels... the end of Vol. 3 especially with Yang losing her arm was way too tragic and made Rooster Teeth look like "Tagedy Gaming Community" or as one girl said at customer service "Soap Opera Gaming Community"
