Jerk with a Heart of Jerk is when someone who looks like Jerk with a Heart of Gold turns out to be a jerk anyhow, even in the purported "heart of gold" act.
Bait the Dog is when a character is set up to be likeable, but then is revealed to be a jerk.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI want to run the idea of real life examples by the discussion board to see if it should be put on the main page.
Specifically, I was thinking of insurgents in the Middle East, who, in the eyes of Western media, went from freedom fighters who helped Rambo kick communist ass in the 80's to Complete Monster fundamentalist terrorists in the 90's, and Imperial Japan, who in the 19th century decided they weren't going to take the Western world's exploit-everybody-who-isn't-white shit and proceeded to modernize at an astounding rate, and beat the Russians at their own game in 1905. They were also part of the allies during World War I. Of course, any badass factor the Japanese Empire had evaporated after World War II when they decided not only to ally themselves with the Nazi's, but also compete with them to see who could commit the worst atrocities.
A fistful of me.As much as I agree with Nena being a good example of this, that picture seems to be 'Picture And A Caption'. I'd recommend that Kazuya Mishima is to be this trope's picture. For these reasons:
- Kazuya can utilize the 'dual picture' feature better as shown in trope pages Hey Its That Guy or Kuudere. The first shows his 'heroic' Tekken 1 self (where he's the FRIGGING MAIN CHARACTER), the second one is his evil self from Tekken 2 and onwards. Or better yet, Devil Kazuya.
- Pictures of those reasoning are easier to find.
- He's the frigging God of the Trope!
What do you say?
What's the difference between this trope and Jerk with a Heart of Jerk?
