Note that James Stewart already redirects to Jimmy Stewart. That should make it a relatively easy switch.

Do Creator pages need TRS, vs just consensus on the new name?

As for consensus, if James Stewart is the primary name used, I don't have a problem with the rename.

From what I can tell, both names are widely used, even if James is more common in actual movie credits. His museum in Indiana is called the Jimmy Stewart Museum, and it appears that he signed his name as Jimmy. There's also a Jimmy Stewart airport in Indiana.

So...I dunno. Six of one, a half dozen of the other? I lean toward James, but I'm not as convinced that's correct as I was when I started looking into it.

I'm equally fine either way, though for sentimental reasons (I grew up on his movies) I lean slightly toward 'Jimmy' because that's how I thought of him growing up. That said, if he's billed as 'James Stewart', that seems like the more correct title to me.

It wasn't just more common, he was always billed as James Stewart. The only time in his whole career he was ever billed as "Jimmy" was on The Jimmy Stewart Show, a sitcom that ran for one season 1971-72.

It looks like there's a "tie" or just as good a reason to keep as there is to switch. The current title has more inbounds and more wicks, though the redirect's numbers are nothing to sneeze at. Maybe just put it on a single prop crowner to see people's general opinons?
