I'm not quite sure what you mean in one. Maybe Training Montage

Two sounds like a justification for Suddenly Always Knew That

This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.

In 1 I mean, when the show is focused on trainings much more, than on actual fights. Roughly speaking, 3 fighting episodes -> 10 boring training episodes -> 3 fighting episodes -> 10 about some other bullshit, and so on.

2 is the Aversion of 1.

1) Time to Unlock More True Potential, one of the cornerstones of Shōnen anime. Can overlap with Breather Episode and/or Filler depending on how it's handled.

2) Aversion of Instant Expert, Justified Suddenly Always Knew That. (They didn't just instantly learn this, its just that we're only now learning that they did... (justified part->) and here's how it happened and maybe why we didn't know they knew that)

The meta-trope you're looking for here is really Fabula and Sujet, and both of these situation can involve several other tropes in that family:

  • How We Got Here: we open the episode on the hero getting the snot beat out of them by their opponent. They fall to their knees and... cue something like "2 weeks earlier..." and a Whole Episode Flashback focusing on the training they did to prepare for the fight... and then jump back to the fight as they hit their Heroic Second Wind.
  • Future Shadowing is similar, but the character is seeing it out of order too; say, they get a vision of getting the snot beat out of them, so they know they need to seek out training that will let them have that Heroic Second Wind.
  • Flash Forward is when it's more like we're seeing snippets of the fight to come as they're learning skills rather than flashing back to how they learned the skills during the battle. (highly underused, but cool when done well)
