Audience-Alienating Ending requires that it receive such backlash it caused fans to retroactively stop caring about the series as no longer worth the disappointing ending or the backlash such even non fans would here about it and outright avoid the work over it. Do those apply in-universe?

Hmm, I guess not. One character suggests watching the sequel series to the one with the alienating ending and the characters admit the rest of the series is good.

Yes, merely disliking the ending isn't enough. The disliked ending has to drive people away from the work as a whole.
