Personally, IMO, Demo Reel failed not because it's plot was utterly boring, didn't make a lot of sense and the characterizations seemed a mishmash and out of place, but because it seemed like It was trying to bite off too much. The focus was that they were in the film business and it was trying to be satirical. Okay...so why spend an entire arc following Donnie through the woods or giving him that weird backstory that he was a failed child actor? Was it supposed to be funny, charming, depressing or all three? Why was the camera man a sailor? is it a social commentary on foreigner's occupations or was it just because they wanted to give that character a funny gimmick? Either way it wasnt explained enough.
It's like they were trying to make Thirty Rock except without Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey.

You are displaying abnormally high compulsions to over-analyze works of fiction and media. Diagnosis: TV Tropes Addiction.https://twitter.com/gookygox/status/293909200562688000
I will peel your skin off and put you in a box full of hungry rats. All because I feel like it.I'm not upset about Demo Reel being cancelled. While there was definitely some good stuff there, it seemed like they could never really decide what they wanted it to be; it went through Re Tools almost every episode.
"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoThey wanted to be (and were very good at I thought) a drama with comedic elements, Matt, so yes Donnie's arc was meant to be depressing. And the pilot had writing conflicts apparently, so that's why the tone got changed into something with loads of troubled pasts.
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.I am sorry the video is good but its implications are not.
I still truly believe it pisses all over everything which has been building up for nearly half a year. I mean if demo reel was a failure end it better than this. The video was good...the ending was garbage.
" I did the right thing, didn't I? It all worked out in the end." "In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends."So have things calmed down this morning?-
I dunno seems like it...man its been a while since this perticular thread blew up like that
" I did the right thing, didn't I? It all worked out in the end." "In the end? Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends."It hasn't blown up this much since Spoony was fired.
METAL GEAR!?It's not really a blow up in my opinion. Shows can be big deals. People get emotional over them. Controversial issues make controverisal opinions. It seemed like people were getting more in a fervor at people getting emotional about shows, than getting into a fervor about the show cancellation itself.
Read my stories! To be fair, only one troper took it badly and started dousing gasoline all over it.
The rest of us are kinda, 'and nothing of value was lost, etc'
I'm a skeptical squirrelDon't generalize, I just read the entire thread, and everyone had a different opinion/reaction to the whole thing.
Read my stories!Yeah. Demo Reel wasn't hard to get over because it only has 5 episodes. I'm more puzzled over what happened in that brain of Doug's. He kept mentioning how much he and Rob wanted to do this even before the Nostalgia Critic, and that he had all these big plans and that it would be a huge show like his previous one! And now he just up and changes his mind like that?
Why do that? Even if I didn't care, it's like what Doug said, "every film's a little miracle". Of course it had value.
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.x3 I suggest you read it again, then.

I'm a skeptical squirrelDude, I just read it, and both posts above me confirm it. Not everyone might be sad about it, but plenty had other reactions that were more than just "oh well."

Read my stories!I'm still puzzled as to why he felt the need to throw in those Truman Show references if he was going to twist it into something that goes completely against that movie's message.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.'The world is changing, kid. The Internet is changing. The writing's on the wall.'
Yep. That whole moral— OUT THE WINDOW!
And even Critic said in a Twilight review at Shadocon that it was time to let go and move on. Also, he hated reviewing! Why would he be so adamant to come back when he was so happy to, well, die?
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.Let's not get out tempers high again. You had several hours to cool down.
@eme: When did he say he HATED reviewing?

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Demo Reel failed, I wasn't a fan, not sad to see it go, but I feel sorry for the people involved. Seriously, what will happen to the actors who aren't connected to the site? Where will they go? Or are they being sent off to greener pastures? Have a nice life, see you never? Would there even be room for them to continue work for the site, would people accept them?
I feel bad for Doug and Rob because Demo Reel was being talked up a lot in those early days. This was what they had always wanted to do... and it crashed hard. So now going back to the Nostalgia Critic feels like a guy going back to something he really doesn't want to do anymore and who is only doing it because there are bills he needs to pay. It feels wrong.
Why not allow other shows to be developped next to the Nostalgia Critic? If he can't spread himself out over multiple shows, then why not take on an invisible role such as writer or director or producer? Delegate. Is Sibling Rivalry still going to be a thing or is that also going to vanish? (again not a big fan, because to me the chemistry isn't really working on screen when they play off each other in something that is supposedly unscripted or is supposed to come across as spontaneous).
I don't know about anyone else, but I simply didn't watch Demo Reel because that's not what I was on the site to do. I was there to watch one guy 'review' and scream at bad old movies and watch another guy do the same with comic books. I made exceptions for the "never watch it unless it's a review thing" with Kickassia and Suburban Knights, and still haven't gotten around to To Boldly Flee, but that's it. I don't like the site for sitcoms.
Also, crossovers usually annoy me. If the people in it genuinely work better together and look like they're having fun (the tone of a video effects it a lot, and you can tell when someone actually enjoys working with someone else), then I'll like it, like Spoony and Linkara, or Nostalgia Critic and Linkara, or Nostalgia Critic and Spoony, or all three. But the majority of the crossovers the Critic had near the supposed end of the show were just crossovers to be crossovers and didn't really add anything. Probably because Doug's a nice guy, and everyone wanted a review with the Critic before he was canned.
At least he managed to get six episodes out and, according to you guys, tie everything up in a neat bow. It works fine as a mini series.
(read trope page)
But good god, if the awesome, funny, and heartwarming moments pages are to be believed it's the greatest thing ever made, just like Kickassia, Suburban Knights, and To Boldly Flee had the audience in tears, or stitches, or clapping, or "d'aaawww"s every three seconds. What is it about TGWTG that makes people list moments that aren't even remotely funny, heartwarming, sad, or awesome in those pages?

...And wasn't he saying in this video that he realized that he still enjoyed doing it and that whole passion for film thing.
@CPF At Youmacon, he said all the crossovers were like Critic saying goodbye and that he told producers if they wanted to have an episode with him, you better nab him now.
Also, at Magfest, Lindsay said the boys wanted to do more original stuff, partly because of all the internet laws. I was always in for the characters, so going back to movie mocking is disappointing.
Regarding the subjective pages, it's just that, subjective. People feel different things.
@Garfield You know I'm talking about the Critic as a persona, right? Scooby Doo review? My Pet Monster? To Boldly Flee? "I'm not even a good critic!"

I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.Maybe Doug didn't hate reviewing. The Critic did. Or, thought he did.
That's another good point. Wasn't one of the reasons Doug decided to end the Critic's show was because he was using copyrighted footage from movies in them, and that way liable to have him stopped by the government instead?! What is he going to do now? Go back to doing that, and raise the chances again?!

Hopefully tempers can go down today.
