The one down the range has a scope rather than any iron sights. It's a real beauty and I think I will eventually graduate to it after shooting some of the less fierce rifles they have down there. Pull-ups and chin-ups, as well as shoulder exercises are good for dealing with recoil, right?

Marines To Get New (Unnecessary) Rifle Toy.

Tuffel! Your odds on the new thing's survival chances vs PVT Snuffy and LCpl Smuckatelli? My odds say a 99% chance of being lost or broken.

If it is what I think it is, fixed to the rifle control and grip in one package, then losing it will indeed be quite the feat.

Putting all the controls for the electronics accessories into a single unit? That virtually guarantees that the unit will get damaged somehow, thus rendering all the electronics useless simultaneously.

Quite possibly so. Though on the other hand the idea is to minimize how many gadgets you have to juggle and fiddle with. It will be interesting to see how this is handled. If it isn't very robust it won't make it any further than the fancy electronics on the OICW. The Marines at Aberdeen put the weapon through its paces and found it wanting in terms of ruggedness. However they did like the awareness equipment.

Probably the individual controls will remain but the gadget will just allow them to be switched on/off or selected in a single spot.

Idiot proofing it will be hard though.

Being old-school, I don't want anything on my guns that require batteries.

If guns hadn't been invented until the modern, IT-tech based age, they wouldn't be anywhere near as reliable as they are now. You wouldn't hear stories about World War One-era machine guns that could fire hundreds of thousands of rounds without malfunctioning.

It reminds me of a joke: a software designer and an automotive engineer go to an electronics expo. The computer guy says, rather smugly, "You know, if the automotive industry had kept pace with the computer industry, we'd all be driving cars that cost a thousand dollars brand-new, and get a hundred miles per gallon."

The automotive engineer replies: "Maybe, but who would want a car that crashes three times a week?"

Ah the DOD and it's idea that the junior enlisted can be trusted with fancy shmancy gear.

AS the saying goes: Put two anvils in a locked conex with a Private standing guard, by lunchtime one will be broken the other missing. And the Private will say he doesn't know what happened.

I'm reminded of an early sketch Jim Henson did for IBM, as a short film to show at training sessions during the coffee breaks: "Monster Eats Machine."

The (talking) machine demonstrates the viewpoint of the designers and engineers who built it, eager to show off their technological skills and knowledge, as it painstakingly explains each of the machine's complex, delicate, and very expensive precision components. The monster, on the other hand, represents the end users, who don't understand technology, don't respect the builders' efforts, and frankly couldn't care less.

The original sketch, made for IBM:

An extended version, seen on the Ed Sullivan Show:

An even later edition, with a different monster, from the Muppet Show:

Time to shill.

So apparently there is a game on steam that allows you to simply fiddle, watch and see how the internals of several firearms work.

I love that game, it's fun but it's hard to unlock new guns unless you buy them outright with real money.

Yep. It has been shared in the gun and military threads in the past. Not much has changed it seems. It is of course fun to pull the guns apart and put them back together.

I do hope that's not the in-game soundtrack, because I can't think of anything more tonally jarring than disassembling and fiddling with firearms to the dulcet tones of high-octane butt rock.

BREAKING: US Army Releases RFI For New 7.62mm Interim Combat Service Rifle.

Apparently ISIS is tooling around with body armor the VDV uses and we're finding out 5.56mm just doesn't cut the mustard anymore.

Halo is beginning to look Hilarious in Hindsight and quite predictive because of the need for .308 AP projectiles in future wars.

My only concern is I heard there are some 6.5mm cartridges that are on the cusp of meeting the requirements and capabilities of .308 while being lighter and more controllable in full auto and being better than 5.56mm at the same time. The CTSAS one in particular. Maybe the interim is needed until that completes and is ready for full-rate?
