...how about we discuss better captions?

I think that's a great idea.

It hasn't been very long but so far there is overwhelming consensus to keep the image, it is unlikely that "delete it" will catch up. What might be a good caption? Should there be a caption at all?

It's not very witty but I could get behind something along the lines of. "It's acceptable in fictional 1940"

This. I'm not very familiar with Birth of a Nation, but if we applied the same standard to a trope like this as to a trope about hate crimes against blacks, we may as well use the curb stomp scene from American History X for such a trope. o.o

Okay, where do I even begin?

a) The whole Birth Of A Nation image on Black Guy Dies First is flawed to begin with. It's not an example. It's like putting an image of a kitten in a basket on Space Opera or on Badass Teacher. its not even what the page is about

B) The scene in American History X is played as sad. It does not glorify the act, it condemns it. The whole movie does. Thats the point. The whole point of the movie is that such an act of brutality is horrifying. So if we had such a trope, saying this would be a bad image is a matter of opinion at best.

Now, yes, finding a better caption IS a good idea.

Asked the person who wanted the image deleted whether a caption would help, answer "no, delete it or nothing"... does anybody want to add a "caption that indicates that the image is meant to be sad and horrifying?" (e.g. "Acceptable in fictional 1940")... or is that more defending against an imaginary problem? I think it is fine with no caption / already is obviously meant to be sad and horrifying.

I don't think that we need a caption indicating that it's supposed to be bad. That's inserting real-world values into a fictional convention, and if anything, increasing the confusion between "Real Life" and "Trope". We aren't primarily about whether tropes are good or bad in Real Life. We're about how they're used in fiction.

It's been three weeks and the crowner's overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the current pic; I'd say this can be locked up.
