I've been getting my ass kicked by the demons in the hard maps.

Well Shin Megami Tensei 4 is out today. I'll be trying it out later today, but I downloaded it overnight with my 2DS in sleep mode.

Well I tried it out. I already died twice and I'm doing the training sidequest. Demons are such assholes.

If you can last past the second boss, you're gold.

eh. of all the games i want to get its honestly the lowest priority. probably wont be getting it for a long while.

Well I'm now able to do Challenge Quests, I'd have done more but my 2DS battery went flat and a friend told me that playing while recharging reduces battery life and I have no idea if it's true or not.

After doing some quick looking, it doesn't look like there are any side effects other then taking longer to charge - the system works off of mains power once it's fully charged so it doesn't drain the battery.

eh...i caved and bought smt4.

to be fair, it was only 18 pounds tho.

..well, that being said im told the physical american release is 18 dollars (12 pounds) so i get the feeling im still arguably being ripped off...

No, on release it was 39 dollars.

Yay, the SMT is released at 20 euros that I can afford :p

jeez, that early game hell...

i very nearly rage-quit before i could finish the tutorial dungeon foray...

eventually managed to get another demon to join.

the lack of defence stat is an awful, awful decision on the developers part. especially since the early game doesnt have buffs to keep you alive or debuffs to prevent 1-hit K Os every battle.

anyways, right now im on the way to find navarre, though i gotta wait for my 3ds to charge first. also, i think i prefer flynn with blonde hair.

Yeah. I hate how it seems that sometimes when you are trying to get a specific demon, you always manage to say the exact thing that makes them either leave or attack you.

I actually forgot how hard the early game is.

okay so overall i like the game; its a nice upgrade of the other games.

but i gotta go over things i dislike:

lack of defence stat. i dont like one-hit K Os and thats pretty much all that happens in nuraku as far as the enemies are concerned. additionally, for a game where ambushes are just flat out doom, enemies should not be spawning on the other side of a door before you're gone through it. theres no time to dodge let alone attack em.

the music. its been very...unmemorable overall so far, but the theme that plays during the rusalka boss fight i thought was kind of awful.

the intro. the voice acting is just kind of embarrassing and most of all i dont see why it has to go on for so long with no way to skip or speed it up. they do it again a short while later when flynn has to take the test to become a samurai, and theres a...what, 30 second cutscene of him just walking over there? its stupid and annoying. i hope they dont do it again.

burroughs. she's fine at first- perhaps a little too intrusive with the constant 1 line tutorials and "do you want me to repeat that" choices that follow- but the quests where you collect items for delivery, particularly since they dont seem to go away after you complete them, leading to her very loudly declaring how many more to go before you've got the quota. its useful, but her voice gets annoying fairly quickly. also, i loathe the way she interrupts story scenes to go "the quest is going well" and give me exp. yeah, sure free exp is nice but id much rather she either wait till she isnt popping up at an awkward time or not make silly quests out of meetings with your friends.

Burroughs is an AI incapable of understanding human emotions. So I never saw the problem with how she interrupted the mood because she isn't capable of seeing it. Also best girl.

And I enjoy some of the new music, like the normal boss theme and the remixes of previous songs. It's actually a shame they didn't use some remixes as well, like the Nocturne intro that was on the CD that came with preordered versions of IV.

it'd be one thing if her interrupting the mood was acknowledged by any other character. the fact that she never is acknowledged just makes it seem like burroughs is being shoehorned into as much of the game as is possible by an overzealous developer who doesnt realise how annoying it is.

but what, is she going to be plot relevent? i should hope so, given how she's by far the most prevalent character in the game so far.

I can tell you right now she gives "The Reason You Suck" Speech on the Neutral Route to an enemy.

Edit: Also her role is mostly to talk to and aid you. Not to others. It's the same for the other Samurai's Burroughs.

alright, i beat minotaur.

...well, im not proud of it since i had to switch to easy mode to do it.

but like, after 12 times of being killed at the end because he keeps getting a fucking critical and thus another move i figure luck based missions arent exactly worth the trouble of anything but the easiest difficulty.

I was lucky myself: I was told ahead of time to use Ice against him, so I loaded down my guess with Ice attacks.

I only had to fight him twice, and I only did that because someone died while I was kicking his ass the first time.

Or was that someone else where I died while fighting but was overall winning anyway.

Can't remember.

One more boss to go and you'll be past the "borderline too hard to be fun" parts. Try to get the demon Toubyou.

Zhu Tun She was the one for me on that boss.
