Dr. Langley did not reply immediately, focusing all her attention on piloting the bus clear of the city; so intent was she on her task that it seemed she was oblivious to the rather chaotic and bizarre sequence of events which followed—which was probably a good thing, all told, because there were a few moments were she had only barely managed to slip the doubledecker spinnerbus through the rapidly-shrinking gap between a pair of collapsing buildings or narrowly avoided a collision with another driver, and any distraction on her part would have spelled death, swift and painful, to the vehicile's occupants.

Fortunately, after a few minutes the onrushing traffic cleared out and they passed over the city limits, signified by the abrupt transition from brightly-shining futuristic skyscrapers to the vast expanse of a shadow-enshrouded forest, whose uneven canopy was so high that it nearly brushed against the bottom of the bus at points. Sighing in relief, Dr. Langley eased off on the pedal and dropped their speed down a few gears, then toggled a switch which activated the bus' forward lights; intense beams of sheer white light cut back the darkness for a short distance, allowing those inside the bus to get a glimpse of the foliage zooming past underneath.

"Yes, the desert," she said at length, though it seemed almost as if she were talking more to herself than actually answering Kimimaro's question. "This bus isn't really meant for intercontinental travel, but it's safer than the alternative; at top speed, we should get there within five, maybe six hours."

She looked as though she might have been about to say more, but paused for some reason; then she shook her head and returned her attention to the task of piloting the spinnerbus.

A minute or so later, she frowned. "I could have sworn that there was a detective with you guys..."

Alas, Rey's slumber would not go undisturbed; in his mind, the dreaming luchadore would be able to hear the faint and distant sound of children giggling, playing and laughing—jovial sounds, to be sure, though muted and indistinct as though coming from underwater.

Papa...Papa...

As Narumi landed, he knew it was hopeless to free the Dalek without having to use another Memory Break. Narumi then took out the Skull Memory and placed it in the Maximum Slot on one of his belt's sides.

SKULL! MAXIMUM DRIVE!

A aura shaped in a giant purple skull emerged out of Narumi's chest, roaring at the monster. Narumi jumped up along with the skull. He kicked the skull at the ophidian, the skull flying towards the ophidian's remaining torso.

Jack was about to speak, then stopped, looking around. Where had Narumi gone? The last Jack had seen of the detective, he had been trying to help the Dalek who had become entrapped. Jack had been carrying Rey at the time, without a way to go back and help. Surely though, he would have been able to accomplish his task and follow them. It was a big vehicle and there were a lot of people here. He might yet turn up. At least, Jack hoped so. The alternative was that yet again, he had been unable to save everyone. Trying to focus on something productive, he spoke to their pilot.

"I am afraid I do not know. But hopefully the time will give us some time to rest and prepare, at least. If you can still speak with Doctor Ikari, perhaps he has some information about these events that might aid us when we arrive. Any information at all is better than nothing."

The ophidian, still regenerating, did not even flinch as Narumi riddled its upper body with bullet holes and blew its face apart a second time. By this point, the snakelike entity had clearly grown bored and turned its attention back to the struggling Sec, who had almost managed to pull himself free; it trailed the sharp edge of one of its sickleclaws along the Dalek's casing with exaggerated care and finesse, leaving a fine, shallow gash in the metalert surface through which rust and decay began to seep into the suit's inner workings.

Then, acting with a sudden speed quite at odds with its lethargic behaviour, it stabbed its other claw into the rent and began to pry the casing open with alarming ease, the durable metal buckling, warping and tearing readily like tissue paper.

Dr. Langley nodded absently, muttering a faint "Right, right,"; Jack might notice that her gaze was unfocused, as though the events of the day were slowly beginning to catch up with her. She switched on her Phi-module and tapped a few keys, alertness and concern slowly creeping back into her eyes as she went through the process of calling her husband.

"Shin, can you hear me? Shin?"

For a moment there was no response, only the faint hiss of static, and Dr. Langley began to bite faintly at her lower lip as the seconds wore on. Then a faint rustling sound came from the metal wristband, and Dr. Ikari's voice could be heard.

"...'m here, Aska; the interfer...to be getting stronger; the closer....to the artefact, the more poten...ruption effect becomes. Are you...right?"

Giving a weak smile, the red-headed scientist nodded. "I'm fine—there were a few close scrapes, but I'm fine. Just hang tight, I'm on the way; I've got some..."

Here she paused and glanced at the bus' passengers, frowning in obvious puzzlement as she deliberated on how to refer to them.

"...people with me," she said at length. "They're all more than a little strange, to say the least, but they seem to mean well, and from what I've seen they may have the power to help you."

"Let's hope so, because...the artefact may prove more difficult than I origi...thought. Half my cre...ead, and the other half are of...anity, and fending of those things...taxing on our resources."

"Doctor Ikari," Jack said, "I wish we could meet under better circumstances, but our situation is dire and we must act quickly and effectively. Anything you can tell us about what is causing this and what precisely is happening would be helpful. What artefact are you talking about, for example?"

There was a tapping noise at the window of the bus. Down at the very bottom, one could just about see biomechanical fingers clinging to the ledge.

"Little help?"

"I was kinda wondering myself, to be honest. Of all the times for a portal to kick in- But that's not important right now. What's important is; there are ungodly abominations coming out of everywhere, we're the only ones capable of stopping it, this vehicle is flying, and my boyish good looks have dissipated! I think I'm gonna miss having flesh. So, what's happening now, then?"
