Whatever the trope ends up being named, it should start with Our Sirens, and if agreement can't be found on anything it should default to Our Sirens Are Different.

No, no snowcloning. We have far too many "Our X Are Y" as it is.

erm, wasn't this just in YKTTW, like, three days ago? i'm just wondering why these name changes don't happen in YKTTW. you'd think if someone doesn't like the trope name, they'd bother to comment. (i don't mean to sound rude or anything, i'm just genuinely confused— perhaps this is just some aspect of TV Tropes culture i haven't quite latched onto yet).

"Whatever the trope ends up being named, it should start with Our Sirens, and if agreement can't be found on anything it should default to Our Sirens Are Different."

No, the entire point is that this isn't an Our Monster Are Different trope and so shouldn't be named like one lest it contribute to the detriment of those tropes already named such.

@carla, Someone did comment that the "louder" bit was a confusing pun, but a troper jumped the gun on the launch. sorry.

From what I've seen, the general consensus is that there aren't enough changes to justify the Our Xes Are Y snowclone. I like Enthralling Sirens, personally, simply because it gives the element of danger that Singing Sirens lacks.

Incidentally, just to have a list, differences posted:

  • From lured to rocks by singing to lured to danger, perhaps her own.
  • From harpy-types to mermaid or human-types.
  • From a specific, concrete number to superheroes/-villains.

With some exceptions, people tend not to give too many comments that are needed on YKTTW these days. It's either nobody's giving name suggestions but everyone's giving examples, or everyone's giving name suggestions but leaving the trope stagnated with the default three, or nobody posting at all.

It gets irritating.

Isn't there some way to post the crowner on the Our Sirens Are Louder page? Or was that all a dream or elaborate daylight fantasy of mine?

I sent a holler to the mods in order to get the crowner hooked up to this thread.

Can someone explain the joke behind the "Our X is Y" thing? Why does the trope have 'our' in front of it? Is there some hidden joke to it, or is it just "hey, we have a bunch of other tropes named in the Our X is Y format, so let's keep doing it because references are funny?"

neither here or there really but the use of sirens in modern times has changed somewhat such as now instead of "enthralling" some are full blown magic users, probably having something to do with circe, and/or having other Make Me Wanna Shout-ish abilities.

"Our Xes Are Y" means "You know what I mean from the name, and you will accept that, e.g., Van Helsing and Dracula are both vampires, despite massive differences in mythology."

Our Vampires Are Different from their vampires. They suck blood, but why, what blood, what constitutes blood, what they may eat in addition to blood...and that's just diet.

Hope that makes sense outside my head.

Makes sense to me, Red Wren. I dislike these snowclones. To me they mean the opposite of what they say. They say "no X is the same" but they mean "under the skin, our creations are the same — they build off a common skeleton".

(I also dislike the "our". It looks awkward and suggests all creations as a group are different to a group of something else. Well of course they are. Spell it out and it gets clunkier: All Our X Are Different One To Another — or rather they are the same at heart.)

The crowner has been stable at these values for a couple of days so we'll give it one more before the change.

I like "Our Vampires Are Different" because it honestly feels like there's a scene or chapter in a lot of works where the writer goes "Look, Our Vampires Are Different. They suck psionic energy and the brain just interprets that at blood. This makes them just a race of psychics and their glamour is mind control. The cool attractive vampire idea comes from them making themselves appear beautiful to you. Turn you into a vampire? Don't be silly. This Is Reality."
