This is a distillation of several drunken discussions/arguments I've had in my living room with friends. The following list of questions came from it.

Note: If you hate classic rock and metal, don't bother. I know some people do (and I feel for them), this survey is for people who like it and have opinions on it. Also, please refrain from posts like " blank should have been listed under X question.

1. The Beatles (I love both, but come on... it's The Beatles)

2. Queen

3. Black Sabbath (^ditto on preferring Zeppelin)

4. Metallica

5. David Lee Roth (though I admit I'm not picky. Less into metal than rock)

6. Ozzy Osbourne

7. Eric Clapton (this one was really tough, but I like Clapton just a little more)

8. Motley Crue

1. The Beatles, no question.
2. It's close, but I'd say Queen
3. Sabbath. Personally I prefer Zep, but Sabbath was more genuinely metal
4. Metallica for me. It's arguable, though.
5. DLR
6. Depends. I think RJD was a better singer, but I identify Ozzy more closely with Sabbath.
7. Hendrix.
8. No real opinion, but GnR are the most listenable of those to me.

no one will notice that I changed this

  2. Queen.
  3. Black Sabbath.
  4. Iron Maiden.
  5. I've hardly listened to Van Halen, so I can't decide.
  6. Ronnie James Dio. (I prefer Ozzy-era Sabbath, but since this question is purely about who the better singer is, I'm going with Dio.)
  7. Jimi Hendrix.
  8. Motley Crue. (I dislike them, but consider them the definitive Sunset Strip band regardless.)

I like classic rock, but when I realized a lot pertained to metal I didn't bother to do it. Will agree on the Beatles though.

"The Beatles are the definitive 60s band".
Naturally.

"David Bowie made the best glam-rock".
I genuinely believe this. If Queen ever made glam, it must not have been one of their better ventures (also, Bowie influenced them).

"Black Sabbath invented heavy metal".
Zep hinted at it, in my mind.

"Iron Maiden defined 80s metal".
They laid the the ground-work for the kind of music that 'Tallica capitalized on.

"Sammy Hagar was the best Van Halen singer".
Not big into Halen, but I kind of like that one Chickenfoot song. Sometimes the lesser singer is better suited (see below).

"Ozzy Osbourne was the best Black Sabbath singer".
In line with the question, Ozzy was the better Black Sabbath singer while Dio was the better singer.

"Eric Clapton is better at blues-rock than the other guy".
Hendrix is Psychedelic to me.

"Motley Crue is the definitive Sunset Strip band".
Crue defined L.A. sleaze metal, while GNR rose (heh) above it.\

  • 1. The Beatles
  • 2. I'd like to say Marc Bolan. I'll say David Bowie, though, even though Queen is my favourite band.
  • 3. Black Sabbath.
  • 4. Iron Maiden (although "eighties metal" was really defined by the hair bands; that's just what metal was at the time).
  • 5. David Lee Roth (though Sammy Hagar is good as well).
  • 6. Dio.
  • 7. Clapton (but Hendrix is probably just about a better guitarist).
  • 8. Guns N' Roses, probably.

  1. B—The Stones were more "definitive," The Beatles more "important." *shrug*
  2. A—Neither really defined the genre, and in general I prefer Bowie, but...
  3. A—Still like Led Zeppelin better, though.
  4. A—Not sure about "defining the genre," but I would rather listen to Metallica.
  5. A—Which doesn't mean I really care.
  6. A—Dio was a technically superior vocalist, but an inferior Sabbath headman.
  7. B—As a blues guitarist, I'd argue Clapton was stronger; in general, it's all screwed.
  8. A—Because I can tolerate them.

I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.
