What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

I always find it kind of strange when people post recent news here. I mean, sure, you didn't know it before, but the way I understand this thread it's supposed to be mostly about stuff you might (or "should") have known, but had somehow missed.

That's just how I read this thread, though. Breaking news is true to the literal sense of the thread's title.

Given my profession, I really should know about this sort of thing as soon as it happens.

One of my jobs includes business insurance and various forms of underwriting when it's on a bigger scale.

After 20 years of being an independent company, Yahoo was bought by Verizon for over $4 billion.

Despite Yahoo's universal brand awareness, I highly doubt that it's actually worth $4 billion.

Wow, really?

Now I'm wondering why it was that cheap, then. (Also: who's still using Yahoo for anything?)

[up]Most of what Yahoo is worth is really in its stakes in other companies. Most of those are in Yahoo Japan and the Alibaba Holding Company.

Right. If I had a shitload of money I'd probably be quite happy invest a lot of it on anything that has holdings in Alibaba. (Well, I suppose that would depend on how much money I actually have - if I'd be thinking only about making more, I'd be buying Alibaba. If I wanted to use the money for something more important than making more I've got a whole bunch of ideas that I might do - such as funding basic research or giving out microloans/development aid, etc.)

Verizon probably got that money from unfair extortion after all the strikes they received in the past months!

Clinton doesn't look good when she has a VP with that opinion, but of course the way they'll actually resolve it - and it will be trivially easy - is to simply never have him involved in any policy decisions where there might be a conflict. The VP doesn't have a whole lot of power, anyway, and while his public opinions might be taken as endorsements by people who share them, in terms of actual policy-making his influence would be very indirect or nonexistent.

He's currently a Senator, and in that position he probably has more direct power over legislation than he will as VP.

I checked Wikipedia just now, and it does seem he's changed his mind about this, and that was several years ago.

I must say, though, I've been following this election quite closely, including via some podcasts and several news sources, and his anti-gay positions have been mentioned several times across a variety of sources, and while it's of course possible that I wasn't paying sufficiently close attention, I did have the impression that he's still against gay marriage and adoption. Either my sources have been vague or just plain wrong about it, or they have actually used phrases like "past position" on the issue or something like that, where I would have somehow missed the implication that the position has changed.

Hillary Clinton, of course, was also famously against gay marriage until relatively recently. My view on that is very similar to how I think about Obama's position on this: they privately supported gay rights, but weren't willing to vote accordingly, or even to speak honestly about it, until polls showed that it wouldn't cost them more votes than they could afford.

There's an anime called Ghost Stories that completely bombed because of its low production values and genericism. When it was dubbed into English, they gave the dubbing team complete control over the script, and the team turned the show into an ad-libbed comedy. It's almost like an abridged series.
