What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

That's how places like that make a profit. Some very few items are cheaper than would be typical, but most of it is overpriced at least a little, and some is overpriced a lot.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.What she said.
In actuality, one can buy Nutella at Poundland for £1. However, it is merely 450 g.
At Asda, one can buy Nutella... for £1. 800 g.
You should see the Dispatches: Secrets of Poundland on 4OD.
Eh, yeah I know all the stuff about giving you less.
Still baffling to me.
"You'd never do something as irrational as dying."This is awesome.
That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Thank you for posting that.

That Danny Elfman did the music for Men In Black. I was watching the opening credits and started thinking, this sounds like the music from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I started for the dvd box, but then "Music by Danny Elfman" popped up on screen.
The science of how to make suckers trust you.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'I dunno - I think the suspicion caused by purposefully holding someone in a hug for 20 seconds may override any trust chemicals.
"Uh...you can let go now."
"But I want you to tr - I mean I just want to keep hugging you!"
"...It's been twenty freaking seconds, how long of a hug - "
"Oh, it's been twenty already? Okay, I'm done."
"We're home, Chewie."On Quite Interesting, I think they said that the best hug lasts for max three seconds or so, and more than that automatically feels awkward.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. One of them actually lasted for 20 seconds, and I don't think they trusted each other that much more after that.

- It's 61 days long.
- More than few people died during the training.
Wow, that really is Spartan.

I know, it still surprised me that everything was a pound.
I was just bewildered at the cheapness. I stood in one isle for a few minutes just unsure whether a pair of headphones I was looking at were really worth £1.
Bought them anyway.
