Most shops open up an hour or two later on Sunday here, but not all, and they all stay open all day, save the very small ones.

You know how it's a meme now that Australia's wildlife is deadly and out to murder you?
Apparently the British colonists didn't agree. According to my lecturer, they thought that Australia was boring and completely empty of 'interesting or useful animals', and considered it their duty to populate the continent with European and exotic animals.
Melbourne Zoo started its life as an acclimatisation centre for imported European birds and creatures about to be released into the wild here.
... The change in attitudes is staggering. Our entire class had these screwed up "WTF why would you do that?!" faces.

Apparently, they wanted us to have wild monkeys running around everywhere as well. They planned on introducing them. Just.... for kicks.
