The big modern mining boom started happening in the 1800's as technology made it possible to dig deeper and more efficiently, so ramshackle mining town sprouted fast wherever there were large ore deposits, since technology aside, mining needs a lot of hands. The people who came to work there were mostly young men far from their families and communities, so often the only thing to spend money on was alcohol.
