Jim Beam is. I figured the last name was a way of bringing that in without being 100% explicit.

I dunno, being worried that the woman your dad's banging may want to turn your room into a BDSM playroom doesn't come off as all that bratty.

Like I said, it's early. And even if her point is reasonable, her tone is definitely brattier than I expect from Sam. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.

Come to think of it, after seeing how Ms. Reed has wielded parental authority over Marten, Sam has sound reason to be concerned. See strip 1835. There's wholesome discipline and there's spirit-crushing.

That could be kinda interesting. Marten's always been a little spineless throughout the comic, Sam doesn't have that problem. Wonder how Mrs. Reed would deal with a child that point-blank refuses to knuckle under......

But this doesn't look set to become a plot point. Mrs Reed is currently recognising Sam's concerns and making sensible efforts to reassure her. She's making a conscious effort not to fall into the wicked stepmother role.

Unless this is all a bwah-hah-hah evil plot, and she's going to turn nasty once she gets established in the house, she's not assuming power over Sam. And even if she did consciously get into the habit of crushing Marten's spirit a bit, that would be a fairly pointless exercise here. Sam is a maturing teenage girl with a fairly well-defined if slightly wacky personality; trying to crush her would just turn into a war of attrition, with no guarantee of victory.

I don't see that as soul crushing just an example of Marten's inherent spinelessness at the time.

And I don't any potential abusiveness in her attitude towards Sam either. I think people are over reacting to her being a dom.
