The first Mega Man Zero was very experimental.
The following games get back to more of the mega man formula but are also quite a bit less bullshit overall.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI've made the horrible mistake of trying to go through Mega Man 3 while only using the Top Spin (or at least, where possible).
Seriously, who the hell coded its collision? The Shadow Man fight is already a pain without his weakness randomly using up all its energy in one hit.

The Protomen enhanced my life.Just about everywhere. It either 'pinks' off just about every enemy and all wily bosses and isn't worth damage and merely stuns enemies outside of the robot master whose weakness it is. You can't win with it.
The same applies for the Top Spin in most cases. Makes the challenge feel impossible, because it is. Because of this, I've actually set up a little score system to help gauge how well I'm doing for each level.
- +2 points for each enemy defeated with the weapon of choice
- +1 point for avoiding enemies immune to the weapon
- -2 points for each enemy defeated with the Mega Buster or other weapon.
- No points counted for Robot Masters or the stage the weapon is obtained from.
I guess Wily learned from Elec Man in 3 and gave all his robots extra insulation.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!It's not any better, but it's less worse in the MM3 Improvement Patch. Outside of the weapon, everything else is definitely changed for the better.
The double Gatling guns were unexpected.

There's been non-lethal options evident in the setting since the first X game. Vile has that attack that stuns you once your health is low enough.
I guess X just would rather blow his enemies to smithereens.
Which is weird considering his pacifism.
You might excuse it by saying its because they know there's no cure for the Sigma virus but they didn't know the virus was a thing until X3.
A mechanic where you can use a special attack to capture a maverick once their health is low enough but only if you haven't used their weakness weapon against them would be fun.
