My view of the word otaku has been almost irreparably tainted by the creepy otaku. When I think otaku I think of things like this. I also think of things like this when I think of loser fans (LFB and LFG).

Of course, there's works like Genshiken but thats really more like a different interpretation of the same concept and trying hard to put it in a positive light.

Kind version of reaction to typical otaku in Japan.

Realistic version of reaction in places where you are not really expected to be polite.

Although Konata is a bad example of typical Otaku in Japan. Shows like Genshiken just try to show the better people in the otaku group who are unfortunately stereotyped. And leave out all the others.

If people learned from their mistakes, there wouldn't be this thing called bad habits.

^ That's why we have Welcome To The NHK. To balance things out, no?

@Geth Knight: I was thinking in terms of Anime fans. Yeah, in other media, we have just as much people to be freaked out by.

Welcome To The NHK has a protagonist thats mainly a hikikomori, the otaku friend; not being the main subject at hand is mainly ignored. So not really..

Does her blog require a Japanese IP address? I was hoping to leave a comment.

Oh, well I do know there are the really creepy ones and such, and that they are the stereotype. I just can't imagine that they really make up a large percentage of all otaku, even if they're treated that way.

I think it's just those that have such a poor grasp on reality that they can't even think of the possibliy that their favorite singer/actor/voice actor could even have a life outside of their work.

^^ If they aren't that creepy, people just think of em as those with similar hobbies as opposed to what they usually believe.

I usually try to defend anime fandom (on online forums at least, when I'm bored), which is why cases such as this kind of annoy me. It's not just the creepy japanese otaku either, look at some of the comments on the sankaku complex article. I mean damn, just damn. What really gets to me is that some people try to be "reasonable" and basically say that "yeah, the obsessive otaku are creepy, but really the dirty slut brought it on herself". I mean, what the fuck is wrong with these people? Do we live in the nineteenth century or what? Hell, even the less inflammatory "reasonable" comments are stupid, because once these people have made death threats, it's no longer just creepy, it's downright disturbing and there is no more looking at the issue from both sides.

Also they (the people at Sankaku) act as though this is the definite end of her career, which I just don't get. Now, I may simply be ignorant as to how much power these retards have, but are they really such a majority as to dictate this kind of thing?

I do know that Suzumiya Haruhi is at least somewhat popular (as in some other people do in fact watch it) outside of the complete over-the-top obsessed otaku crowd in japan, but these people might not care much about the voice actors in the first place, so who knows.

Not to mention that she [Aya] have been reading English-language websites. We know she spent some childhood in America and could probably read one though speak it gratuitously.

We must hurl encouragement, not like, "You are a b****. You deserve it."

I want to see her scream "Go fuck yourself!" (in English) to those guys and show them the middle finger. Due to this being Japan we're talking about, this is considered a mild insult which doesn't make sense.

It's rather unfortunate that the fanbase that was "most devoted" to her and thus would be the ones to be following her on social networking sites would also be the most insane, and thus ripe to do this kind of thing one they found out that *gasp* she's a human being and wants to have normal relationships.

There's probably a fair amount of people who, although they might frown on some of the aspects of her love life, could really care less in the end. We never hear from these people though, because they don't feel the need to comment on it. Instead all we get are the hyper obsessed fans to whom there are only two options: untouchable virgin queen or promiscuous depraved harlot with absolutely no middle ground.

And then of course there's the whole "If I can't have her, then no one can!" attitude which just gets downright insane and life threatening.

Really, I wish her the best of luck in her career, and hope that she seeks proper protection from her more deluded/psychotic "fans".

No, Aya, that's not the way you react to a death threat. YOU SIC THE FUCKING POLICE ON THEM.

Well, from what I've garnered, they're not overt death threats but rather the standard trollish, "Die in a fire, you dumb whore" sorts of threats — So unless she wants to trust in the power of the Internet Police, she can't do much about it.

Still, I'm hoping that these are all just empty trollish threats, because if they aren't...

Considering that insane fans have physically tried or planned to assassinate actresses in the past, I wouldn't put it above any of them.

From a different article on Sankaku:

The Article Reads:

A young man (19) who threatened to stab a seiyuu, thought to be 茅原実里 / Minori Chihara (or みのりん / Minorin), who provides, amongst many others, the voices of Yuki Nagato and Minamike’s Chiaki, has been arrested.

On investigation, he was found to have made a post to a board, from a public computer at a community centre on the 29th of August, saying with reference to the seiyuu: “Die! On the 30th I’ll stab her with a knife!”

Police sprung on the man a month later, arresting him on suspicion of making the death threat. He admits to his crime.

The threat came to light when the seiyuu’s vigilant manager spotted the post, and reported it to police.

There is some doubt over the identity of the target of the threat; the only information released was that the seiyuu in question is 27; this rather narrows it down, and it generally seems to be thought Minori Chihara is the most likely target (there are not so many possibilities).

And this was in regards to an actress that hadn't even done anything to rile the fanbase. Some nutjob just wanted to stab her just because.

This is sad.

I thought Yoko Oh No was bad in most cases...this just trumps a lot of what I've seen.

I'm not sure, but any time anyone makes a death threat, its usually taken seriously in the United States, and it seems from the other posts, the same is true in Japan. So I doubt that they aren't preparing to spring on these guys if they try anything.

At least the fandumb that were pissed at her leaving voice acting made a tad bit more sense.
