For every spell you cast, every other player that casts an Instant or activates a creature ability in response to it pays 5 life.

[up] I would change that to "Whenever an opponent casts a spell or activates an ability, if it's not that player's main phase, counter that spell or ability unless its controller pays 5 life."

Or to avoid giving them an easy way to dump cards into their graveyard (which could be beneficial to them), "Whenever it's not an opponent's main phase, that player must pay 5 life as an additional cost to cast a spell or activate an ability."

Wording might be wonky.

[up][up][up]That's what it looks like. Tabak mentioned something about it on his blog.

From what it looks like, they could make Basic creatures if they really, really wanted to, but it has too many problems with it for them to want to.

Fair enough. Given the shenanigans that already happen with having more than four of a given card in your deck (aside from the obvious ones, of course!), if they need the space that would be used for the 'any number of this card' wording for something else, odds are the card's going to have other, bigger problems.

[up][up][up][up] Basically the card's intent is, "if you want to Counter my spells, pay five life each time."

Nether Sphere - 3BX
Artifact
~ enters the battlefield with X charge counters on it.
Whenever a player casts a spell, counter that spell unless it's owner pays {X}, where X is the number of charge counters on ~.
Designed to repress entire empires, but used to torture mind mages for a chuckle.

[up][up]None of the colors Blue, Green, or Red get direct creature destruction. Blue can bounce and polymorph, Green can destroy any non-creature permanents and creatures with flying, red does get creature destruction, but only in board wipes

Direct Creature Destruction is Destroy Target Creature. So, blue has that.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=159147

And Red.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=289227

Oh look, green has it too. But Green is the only one with a limiting factor to what kind of creature it can destroy.

You say they can't do it and then go around and say that they can do it but with limiting factors. That still means they can do it

Pongify is a polymorph spell. Blue can destroy, but only if it gives you something in return (and to be frank I think Ma Ro is hypocritical in his belief that those don't break the color pie and Beast Within does). There are three non-conditional Destroy target creature spells ever printed none printed after tempest. All other require the creature to have defender, be an artifact, or have power under a certain number (usually 2).

StephanReiken Since: May, 2010
#12790: Feb 14th 2015 at 6:48:58 AM

Conditionals are interesting, but meaningless when it comes to whether or not they have direct creature destruction. The answer is yes.

BigMadDraco Since: Mar, 2010 Relationship Status: [TOP SECRET]
#12791: Feb 14th 2015 at 7:02:04 AM

It is when you are combining the colors that only get polymorph and conditional destruction to create a spell with unconditional creature destruction.

[up][up]

Sunbeam of Spite (XW)
Instant
Deal X damage to target creature.

Found Guilty (1WW)
Instant
Destroy target creature.

Meditate (3WW)
Instant
Draw three cards.

By your argument, these are all totally okay white cards, because white has conditional direct damage, conditional creature destruction, and conditional card draw, therefore it is totally okay to give them cards that completely ignore the word "conditional".

Edit: Card tax: Cheaty permanent removal spells that technically obey the colour pie but break the spirit (Maro has said they try not to do cards like this).

Decapitate (2WW)
Sorcery
Tap target creature, then destroy target tapped creature.

Revise History (2UU)
Instant
Exile target creature. Its controller puts a 3/3 green Beast creature onto the battlefield. Then return target creature to its owner's hand.

Scorpion Brawl (1GG)
Instant
Put a 1/1 green Scorpion creature token with deathtouch onto the battlefield. That token fights target creature.

There, I changed the card. Damn but it caused a stir.

  • Silverine Inquisitor 7
  • Artifact Creature - Golem
  • Causality 5 (1) - you can cast ~ for its causality cost. If you do, exile it and put 5 existence counters on it. When your opponent draws a card outside their draw step, remove an existence counter from ~. When the last counter is removed, put ~ into play
  • Protection from Blue, Hexproof
  • When this creature deals combat damage to a player, discard 2 cards from that player's hand.
  • 6/6
  • No amount of guile will save you from the ravages of causality.-Daeth

  • Golden Paragon 10
  • Artifact Creature - Angel
  • Causality 3 (0) - (you may cast ~ for its Causality cost. If you do, put 3 Existence counters on it. During each of your upkeeps, remove an Existence counter from ~. When the last counter is removed, put ~ into play)
  • Flying, Trample, Hexproof
  • Your opponent may pay 3 life or discard 2 cards from their hand to put 1 Existence counter on this card.
  • 10/10
  • Expect no mercy or grace from this being. It discarded those ideas when it ascended into Daeth's favor.

[up] You need to specify the colour of tokens that cards produce, and there are a couple of issues with Goht:

A) The abilities don't play nicely together. Why force it to attack every turn if you can just ping something to tap it and keep it from attacking?

B) Is it blue just to bring down the cost? Because nothing about that card is blue. Coloured artifacts have appeared at least occasionally in all colours on the two occasions we've had them (their concentration in WUB in Shards of Alara was more because of Esper), and all the abilities are red.

I would probably replace the ping ability with "Whenever ~ becomes tapped, it deals 1 damage to target creature" and cost it at 3RR. If it has to be blue-red, I'd give it a blue ability such as a milling or card draw saboteur ability, tapping creatures, or "this creature is hexproof when attacking".

Card tax:

Gorblat the Cunning (3UBR)
Legendary Creature - Human Barbarian
5/4
Haste, trample
