An announcement from James -

The short version is that new Nerd episodes will be on Amazon Prime alongside stuff like The Tick, Classic Game Room, and Sneaky Pete. However, they will still come to Youtube after a delay.

[up]Issues with the company aside, being on a real On-Demand service in general while Channel Awesome is (metaphorically) burning to the ground really shows the difference between James and Doug.

Wow, really? I mean, I don't like Amazon Prime either, but congrats to James nonetheless.

"So uh, I watched that apparently infamous Minecraft with Inspector Gadget video.

What in the fuck did I just watch...this is...what's the punchline? What's the humor? Is this even humor? Is this...is the punchline that it's not funny? Or...I don't even know what I just watched but it was the worst two minutes and forty-eight seconds of my life."

It seems to be a semi-sequel to "Inspector Gadget Explains How to Use Cinemassacre", which is itself a follow-up to "Super Mario Bros. Super Show DVD Review". What's interesting is that the Minecraft video was done by Mike Matei, while the "Explains" video was done by James Rolfe, so you can compare the two filmmakers' comedy styles. Personally, I found James's Gadget video to be much funnier.

As for the new episode debuting on Amazon first, my misgivings with Amazon aside, congrats to James for possibly reaching a wider audience with this approach. And I'm glad you don't have to be a Prime member to watch it, as I don't have Prime. It's also nice that the episodes will still be shown on YT at a later date.

Well, I've watch the Earthbound AVGN episode and my goodness is it surreal and trips. This is the kind of good game that is made for the AVGN. All the surreal images, horrifying enemies and annoying game features... mixed in perfectly for the Nerd's frustration, rage and love of horror. I have to wonder if he had any Adult Fear when playing this game. Especially when he fights Giygas and sees the shape of the baby.

Damn, his daughter is 4 already? Seems like not that long ago he was still talking about her being a baby.

I've always wondered, why is Mike so widely hated? I get that some of his early videos were kind of lame (I wasn't crazy about Minecraft with Gadget either), and I get that many of the subscribers are there for AVGN and probably don't find Mike's stuff that interesting. That's fair. But seeing Mike on the channel now, he seems amiable enough, and him and James always seem to have a lot of fun together. Maybe I'm biased because I've always liked Mike personally, but it stuns me sometimes how much bile he gets.

I don't mean to make the thread too complain-y or anything. I'm just honestly curious why so many people don't like him.

[up] Finding out he was (and maybe still is) a racist asshole who drew really racist comics a while back probably didn't help.

True, but from what I've seen, he's always been unpopular with a lot of people, well before the comic came to light. Or have people known about the comic for longer than that? Either way, I know there's probably more to it than that. I just never understood all the dislike myself.

Mike's more of a dick in general. Said comic probably put him to Jon Tron levels of scandal though. I pray it's an Old Shame.

The thing with Jon is that he was recently actively racist.

Mike wasn't. I'd suggest holding the horses unless that changes.

I agree. I've been watching Cinemassacre regularly since 2012, and I've never seen anything in any of their videos that made me think Mike was racist, sexist, or prejudiced in any way. I won't defend what's on the comic, but at the same time, I'm not inclined to judge him for it either simply because it was a decade and a half ago. I've definitely said or done things in my own past that I'm ashamed of.

Mike can be kind of opinionated sometimes, but eh, he always seemed like a pretty friendly and easygoing fellow otherwise. Although I get that different people have had different experiences with him.

I just don't really find him engaging, at least on his own. His streams tend to be boring, and he *really* needs James around to play off of, I think.

Never really had a problem against him, though.

His edited game reviews are better than his streams. They're not as humorous as a typical AVGN episode, but I'm glad he gave us new content during that dry period while James worked on the AVGN Movie.

As I've said previously, I don't have any big beef with Mike. Though it's mainly for his chemistry with James.

Here's a side question: Who is everyone's favorite guest star on James & Mike Mondays? Personally, I loved whenever Pat Contri was on. A shame he hasn't been for a couple years now.

Changing the topic a bit, anyone know if James plans on doing more "Extremely Nerdy Film Trivia" videos? I mean ones where he discusses something meaningless from specific films (i.e. the cardboard in Dracula, or the lantern man in Phantom of the Opera). I kind of liked those videos, and disappointing he only did about 4 of them before abruptly stopping.

[up] No clue, but would like to see more videos of that regarding obscure useless movie trivias that only nerds with no life would give a shit for. They are pretty interesting.

Anyway I did saw that Earthbound video on Amazon Prime (love it or hate it, its still the streaming service that allows me to watch all episodes of Batman and Supertman TAS) and it was a really good episode that really did pin point the appeal (the story, dialogue from NP Cs, fighting system) and flaws (game speed, item inventory, that pedophile who always randomly appears to take your photo . . . yeah that was my and many others interpretation of that guy when playing the game). There was plenty of funny moments in said episode like that fake N64 game cagridge for the movie Mother! as he talked about the Mother games, that gag showcasing how ridiculous it is in real life to go around a desk to hand somebody an item, and his explanation of the image of Gigyas is supposed to represent childhood trauma: cue the image of Gigyas appearing as the LJN logo and the ET game sprite. Overall its a good review to a great game that is worth the whole 4 month wait.

So, yesterday, I got AVGN Adventures on the Wii U.

I think it's fun so far, but I am aware of the difficulty.

I hear the second game is better. I'd probably get it if it wasn't PC-only (I just prefer consoles for gaming).

If I may be so bold as to go back to Mike for a sec; speaking for myself (and I know I commented on this in this very thread a few years back) my big issue with Mike is he's big on Gamer (with a capital G) gatekeeping. He did a whole video complaining about the Super Guide, for example.

I haven't seen the new Nerd yet (I don't have Amazon Prime, nor do I plan to get it) but pleasantly surprised to see he's doing Earthbound. James and Mike don't seem to play RP Gs much at all (their often enormous length no doubt a serious issue) so that's very refreshing and different.
