Writing Blogs?

If you have one, where is it? :)

And do you think it's a good idea? If so, would you have tips for getting started?

I have one.

I use it when I want to express my opinion on something and it doesn't readily fit into another setting. Since starting university and finding the TV Tropes forums, that's occurred less and less.

My advice? Have a blog if you want one, but don't feel obligated to write regularly if it's just not happening.

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

Here's mine, I think it's a good idea, something I can update sporadically when something fascinating in geek culture crosses my mind. Critique would be nice though.

I have one, here, though it seems that I handle things somewhat differently—I try to post flash-fiction on a schedule, which has done wonders for getting me to be creative on demand, though sometimes what I produce isn't of the best quality. Though, I've been at it for a year, now, and only slipped from my thrice-weekly schedule twice.

Personally, I think that being creative on a schedule has been great for me, and it's one of the reasons I started it. It's a great way to hone your skills and maybe draw attention to your work, should you want to write professionally.

In short, it's my opinion that it can do wonders for one's work.

Ettina— yours is interesting. Not quite what I was thinking of, being more event and times-oriented. I have personal reasons to stay out of political debates, but you manage to strike a good balance between the facts and the way they relate to you personally instead of stating an event and then devolving into ten paragraphs of bitter hateful political ranting. Little is as disappointing as tripping over a blog post filled with vulgarity, finger-pointing, and name-calling— with a few dozen comments to the extent of 'amen that' and a few dozen in half-aborted flame wars.

Also, the post on uncanny valley was of interest to me, because as someone with a mild— metabolic, I think?— disorder that when untreated or aggravated causes severe mood disorders, I've had that effect on people. There were some annoying troper tales, but several came from applying a category of human-but-not-quite-right rather than almost-human. Of course, everyone deserves to be treated as human. But I have been freaked out by some borderline-sociopathic multispectrum abusive-type schizophrenics that I've met, because they would aggravate their symptoms in order to manipulate people and lied often and flawlessly. I never cut them out completely, but had to take measures so as to not encourage or reward their behavior.

And now that that wall of text is over with— heh, sorry, some subjects hit kind of close to home.

AC Drawings— your blog is relevant to my interests! I'm bad at feedback. But there's a difference between blogs that claim to approach political issues with a neutral standpoint and then rant and a blog that is expressly for the purpose of somewhat angry headscratching over subculture wankery. The former is annoying but the latter is definitely acceptable. Also I kind of like jrpgs, although were you thinking that the VG Cats comic was agreeing or disagreeing with you? It complimented the classics— admittedly backhandedly— and then proceeded to go on a classic and highly specific FF 13 rant, and then went aside and explained that the whole thing was the wrong way to approach a rant? I got lost. But yeah, people are using a misnomer when they say jrpgs, since what they really mean is a moderate number of big-budget console rpgs. There has been some cool stuff lately, especially on the mobile game devices. Not sure how often you'll be updating, but I'll wander by periodically.

Czernobog— that's kind of along the lines of what I was hoping to hear about, and thinking of trying someday. I meant blogs about writing, although I'm certainly not going to complain now considering the interesting variety in the response. Flash-fiction is more of my thing, and I need the practice like I need more exercise, more organizational practice, and a better work ethic. (Long story short, very much so.) Also, I've particularly bookmarked it to check during my thrice-weekly webcomic checks. You're a cool writer. The first one was particularly chilling, and one partway through caught my eye involving a dwarf, an apparently attractive woman with a scary arm, and a man who owes a favor.

Wow, this turned into a giant wall of text. But, basically, I can't wait to hear more.

Edit: Also, Czernobog? You know that sociopath that you say is the most evil thing you've ever written? I've met people kind of like that. And if that was what they enjoyed, they would go all the way with it.

Well, I mostly just do speculative fiction—I wanted to write a sociopath in a completely believable context. While in fiction, you can have an Omnicidal Maniac or Dimension Lord and it will work out as a Complete Monster, sometimes people are more creeped out by someone covertly snipping a bit of their hair off just for the hell of it.

This is my personal blog here. This is where I be crazy and bitchy and random and post strange images that I stumble upon during my wanderings of the web and ramble about my strange opinions.

I keep a separate blog to keep track of my progress with Ice Heart. (Not like anyone reads it, but it makes me feel productive.)

Tumblr is a good place to start a blog— unless you don't like templates. It's a horror if you try to code the webpage yourself.

I've decided to make a WordPress blog.

I've decided that Tumblr isn't exactly for me, as I'm not reblog-happy, there's random porn everywhere (an inconvnience if I'm bored at a cafe or wherever and decide to look at Tumblr for a bit), it's quite limited in features (terrible commenting system as mentioned, for one), and its userbase doesn't sit well with me (reblog quote pyramids that I get to witness every iteration of and making posts like it's IRC). So I've decided to take a break from Tumblr and fall back on WP and see how that turns out, only checking out my own Tumblr once in a while to make sure it's fetching my WP RSS feed properly.

I will kinda miss the social element of Tumblr though, especially since not a lot of my friends use WP.

As for tips, when I started mine I made two or three entries before telling anyone about it, reason being that I didn't knew if I'd really enjoy writting a blog, turns out I did more than expected.

I'm not a native english speaker, please forgive my bad grammar and misspells.

I'm part of an anime blog here. Someone on there asked around for other contributors, and I said yes, so they put me on.

I mostly talk about manga-related stuff, and I did a preview of Deadman Wonderland the other day. I'm still getting the hang of it, though I at least wanted to do more than just recap what I've read.

Recipes, and other thoughts about food. I try to update daily. I've found that writing, any kind of writing, really helps when I get around to craft fiction. The flow is just smoother, and my language choices seem to be more developed.

Anyone else find blogging useful, when it comes to writing for other mediums?

Hmm...didn't see this until recently.

I have my own blog here, and I say it's updated every week, but it's more along the lines of whenever I feel like it.

I do have plans to start my own Phineas And Ferb blog, but I don't know where I want to actually put it. Xanga (bless its heart) isn't really the best spot to put a blog (although they do have connectability to Facebook, which is a plus), so I want to put it somewhere else. Perhaps Live Journal, or maybe even the P&F wiki, I don't know.

My advice, if anyone is looking for some or is starting one, is don't announce a set schedule if you aren't willing to adhere to it for a while. This was my mistake; I wanted updates every Tuesday, but it would eventually get to the point where Tuesday would come and I just wouldn't be bothered to put something up.

I'm getting slightly better now (helps that bin Laden died so that I have something to talk about), but it's a work in progress.

I've started experimenting with Posterous, after stumbling across it on a friend's Twitter.

I set up an account and I'm liking it so far; it's a nice medium between Tumblr and WordPress; not excessively simplified like Tumblr, but not as complicated to manipulate as WP. I especially love the auto-post feature; I can export posts to Tumblr and not only do the posts themselves sync character for character, but the tags as well. One major problem though is that syncing accounts will force a link on your profile; this is especially a problem if you want to crosspost to, say, Facebook, but don't want to publicly reveal your Facebook profile.

It seems like the main draw of Posterous is being able to make posts by email, which is convenient. Although I prefer to post by web so I can immediately add tags and crosspost.

I'm gonna use this as a replacement for WP and see how far this goes. Doesn't seem very well-known though; it's even less popular than WP.

I have about 11 or so blogs for my work in The Fear Mythos.

My blog. I'm still trying to find the purpose for it besides talking about my work (I don't have a lot to talk about it right now), but I'm thinking of interpreting the music video for Lady Gaga's "You and I" and reviewing some books.

I'm using this right now. Focus on writing, but I talk about other stuff, too. More mature than my old Tumblr, anyway.

My blog is off Wordpress. I used to write off of Blogger but I grew tired of it real quick. Now that I have time and wireless access, I post frequently. Mostly comics-related geek culture and comic reviews. Recently I've been writing my posts Cracked-style. I've only gotten one comment so far. Show some comment love, pleeeeaseeee?
